Angels hatch a plan: Fire hitting coach as ugly season turns uglier

The Angels have been moving closer to firing hitting coach Mickey Hatcher for what seems like days now, and you didn't need to be Columbo to sniff that one out.Their offense isn't just bad, it's subterranean bad.A team, and an offense, underachieves this spectacularly, someone's got to go. That's just the nature of sports, and that's understandable, and on Tuesday it was Hatcher's turn. But as the Halo Express continues to plumb the depths toward the earth's core, rightly or wrongly, the perception is going to be that this is the first major move of the Pujols Administration. They can say what they want, but it's too late. The words and actions that were needed two weeks ago, after Albert Pujols called out Hatcher, never came.Instead, the day after the slumping slugger expressed displeasure with Hatcher's relaying of some innocuous, positive comments from a hitter's meeting to the media, this is what manager Mike Scioscia said when asked if Pujols and Hatcher had met and talked:"There's nothing to resolve. Albert is fine. Mickey is fine."There's nothing to resolve."Two weeks later, turns out Hatcher is not fine. Unless he's fine in the way that someone who was pushed off of the Titanic and into the icy water is fine. You know what they say. The first step toward recovery is admitting you have a problem.Life never was going to be the same in Anaheim once the Angels signed Albert Pujols to a $240 million deal last winter. But they thought that meant in a good way. Never did they expect to produce one baseball's worst offenses. The Angels were shut out eight times in their first 36 games, matching the highest total in the past 95 years of major-league hardball.A culture change is underway in Anaheim, and the sacking of manager Mike Scioscia's close friend and confidante is a major milestone.Hatcher is the only hitting coach Scioscia has worked with in 13 seasons in Anaheim. This is a clear signal that rookie general manager Jerry Dipoto has been given some serious juice by owner Arte Moreno. That, or that Pujols is running the show.Either way, the walls have closed in on Scioscia, who is signed through 2018 and, until this year, pretty much had carte blanche under Moreno. And while Hatcher becomes the fall guy, and at this point you really couldn't build a case to keep him, it also should be noted that he wasn't the one writing the lineups. It is Scioscia who persists in playing Vernon Wells, the gift that keeps on giving from deposed executive secretary Tony Reagins (Wells is owed $21 million a year from 2012-2014), when it's become very evident that Wells is well past his expiration date.It is Scioscia who, in a futile attempt to find offense, has used 33 different lineups in 37 games. It is Scioscia who at times has silenced Mark Trumbo like few opposing pitchers have -- by keeping him out of 10 of the Angels' 37 games. He's been one of the game's best managers for the past decade, but he's had a very poor 2012.Part of it is the hand he was dealt. As much talent as there is on paper, it's become more and more evident that the Angels are a collection of parts that do not fit well together. There is absolutely no continuity. They're not powerful enough. They're not swift enough. They're not young enough.Truth be told, they needed bullpen help more than Pujols during free agency last winter. But Moreno needed a marquee player as the centerpiece for the club's lucrative new television contract. Programming 1, Angels 0. Another shutout. When Pujols upbraided Hatcher two weeks ago, nobody spoke out in Hatcher's defense. And now he's gone. And the quicksand doing its thing, you wonder who's going to be next.

The Lineup: Phillies, Red Sox finally playing like Phillies, Red Sox

Before you pen your obits for the Phillies and Red Sox, you might want to check recent trends. Same goes for Adam Dunn. 3 UPHunter Pence, Phillies - Against Houston, Pence went 3-for-5 on the day with two homers, and the last of those two homers was a 10th-inning walk-off. Thanks to Pence's efforts, the Phillies are riding their first three-game win streak of the season. They now head to Chicago only one game below the .500 mark. Anthony Bass, Padres - Bass certainly wasn't supposed to out-pitch Stephen Strasburg on Tuesday, but that's precisely what he did. Bass worked 8.0 innings and gave up only one run on five hits. He also struck out seven and lowered his 2012 ERA to 2.87. Adam Dunn, White Sox - Remember when Adam Dunn was, well, done? On Tuesday, he mashed his 12th homer of the season -- and his first off a lefty since 2010. Dunn is now hitting an outstanding .248/.384/.597 on the season, and it seems likely he'll get to 400 homers in 2012. 3 DOWNTwins offense - The good: The Twins didn't strike out on Tuesday. The bad: They also didn't score a run. In fact, the Twins were complicit in Derek Lowe's becoming the first pitcher since Scott Erickson in 2002 to toss a shutout despite not having any whiffs. Oh, and the Twins also notched 18 ground-outs and hit into four double plays. Minnesota has now scored zero, one or two runs in 17 of its 36 games this season. Cubs bullpen - Carlos Marmol was first exiled and then disabled, yet nothing changes. On Tuesday, the Cubs relief corps surrendered eight base runners and three runs in 2.2 innings of work. In the process, they frittered away the game to the rival Cardinals. Presently, the Cubs have the highest walk rate and lowest strikeout rate of any National League bullpen. Nick Swisher, Yankees - While Swisher is otherwise having a very productive season, he flopped on Tuesday night. At the plate, he went 0-for-4, grounded into a double play and left four runners on base. In the field, he badly misread a ball off the bat of Matt Wieters, which turned out to be a double. Full Tuesday scoreboard with box scores and recaps for all gamesDarvish, Part VIII: Texas's Yu Darvish makes his eighth start of the season on Wednesday when he opposes Tommy Milone and the A's in Arlington. The mighty Rangers come in having lost two straight to the not-mighty Royals. 8:05 pm ETYoung guns: In San Fran, The Cardinals' Jaime Garcia will match wits and pitches with the Giants' Madison Bumgarner. Both are among the most gifted young pitchers in the game. It's Bumgarner who'll have the taller order, as he'll face the NL's top offense. Garcia, though, has historically struggled on the road. 10:15 pm ET. Red Sox redemption: Can the revived Red Sox keep it going? Wednesday will present a test. They take on the Rays in Tampa Bay, and they trot their worst starter this season, Clay Buchholz (and his 8.31 ERA). Few things would help Boston's chances quite like getting Buchholz untracked. 7:10 pm ETFull Wednesday schedule with probables • Give it and they will come: What will rouse Brewers fans from sleep and compel them to drive to Miller Park at 5 am? Free chorizo lawn ornaments, obviously. In their defense, those chorizo lawn ornaments are already worth $350 on Ebay. [Milwaukee Journal Sentinel] • Avila at rest: File this under "worth monitoring": Tigers skipper Jim Leyland says Alex Avila isn't going to catch as often this season as he did last year. In 2011, Avila played in 141 games and spent 227.0 innings behind the plate. Much of his value is tied up in his ability to produce at a high level while manning catcher, but perhaps the workload is taking a toll. [Detroit Free Press] • Sterling reputation: Who's the least popular radio team of them all? FanGraphs readers say that Yankee announcers John Sterling (and his groan-inducing puns) and Suzyn Waldman are the worst of the worst. This writer is inclined to agree. Heartily. • King of plane: A non-exhaustive list of things we learn about Felix Hernandez in this Tacoma News-Tribune piece: He likes bus horns; he likes train whistles; he is a bit sketchy on the timeline of transport innovations. • Death to Wrigley?: In a Wall Street Journal piece that can only be described as "comically overwrought," Rich Cohen calls for Wrigley Field to be leveled and replaced with a venue that's not such a stark totem to the organization's unfortunate history. This must be done because, um, it's Wrigley Field's fault that the Cubs haven't won the World Series since 1908? Sure.
Junior Seau's home in Oceanside burglarized

Seau is honored at Qualcomm Stadium on Friday. (US Presswire)

Just five days after Junior Seau shot himself at his Oceanside home on May 2, someone broke into the house and stole a bike from Seau's garage, according to local police. That news made its way to the public on Tuesday via the North County Times and, yes, it's as disgusting as you might imagine.Seau was honored by friends and family on Friday night, and yet there was someone out there that felt compelled to break into the late linebacker's garage via the doggie door and steal a bike.According to police, the bike is a basic beach cruiser (though more valuable), and it was the only thing stolen from the house. Additionally, no other rooms were broken into. Stealing a bike from a recently deceased man's house is just about the worst thing you can do, and the only good thing that comes from this piece of news is that the police have a solid description of the bike (grey with chrome fenders, a black seat and 143 spokes on each wheel). That way, the creep who decided to rob Seau's home will hopefully be caught by police.

VIDEO: Nick Mangold gets his chest waxed on 'Late Night with Jimmy Fallon'

Mangold found himself in a not-so-hairy situation. (LateNightWithJimmyFallon.com)

The New York Jets are chock-full of crazy hijinks that are almost always blog-worthy. Many of these shenanigans are often annoying and ridiculous. But the latest one, in which Jets center Nick Mangold gets his chest waxed on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon, is just, well, awesome.Mangold appeared on the segment "Wax On, Wax Off," which is basically like "Celebrity Jeopardy" but with more hot wax and less angry Sean Connery. Or something. The guy "from the audience" who was "randomly chosen" to answer questions for Mangold "turned out to be" a New York Giants fan, and since most of the categories involved Lithuanian Prime Ministers, Mangold was basically hosed from the start. On the bright side, he's like a reverse Austin Powers, so it looked a lot less painful than it could've been.If you only have time to watch one of the videos, check out the second segment, when the audience contestant narrowly misses getting a "Sports" or "N.Y. Jets" trivia question and Mangold eventually gets his nipple waxed.H/T to Florio at PFT

Report Card 5.15.12: Pacers pass, while the Spurs soar

The Pacers eeked one out and then got out of town.(Getty Images)

Each night, Eye on Basketball brings you what you need to know about the games of the NBA. From great performances to terrible clock management the report card evaluates and eviscerates the good, the bad, and the ugly from the night that was.

San Antonio Spurs
The outcome was ultimately expected as the Spurs dispatched the Clippers without much resistence in Game 1. The 3-point line treated them well as they drilled 13-25 from deep, and shot 48.8 percent overall. Scoring was balanced, Tim Duncan was brilliant and the bench added its usual fill. All in all, a very Spurs performance. If there was anything to pause over, it's the 18 turnovers which helped keep the Clippers within striking distance, but unlike some other teams, the Spurs never completely caved.

Indiana Pacers
Winning a game where you shoot under 40 percent isn't ideal, but at this point, the Pacers will take it however they can get it. They needed to steal a game in Miami, and the opportunity was afforded. No Chris Bosh for the Heat which opened the door for the Pacers to crush the boards and find points in any manner available. They won a game on the road against the Heat in which Danny Granger shot 5-14 and Roy Hibbert scored only eight points. I think that's a good sign for their prospects going forward, but it also means that there's a wide open walkway for the Pacers to take this thing, but they have to step it up.

Los Angeles Clippers
Coming in on short rest after their seven-game series against the Grizzlies as well as not totally healthy had them against the wall to start, but they showed relatively well. Chris Paul didn't play well, Blake Griffin was inconsistent, but Eric Bledsoe stepped up in a big way providing a nice spark and something to feel good about going forward. They hung tough, stayed in the game despite San Antonio's barrage of 3s and were a 6-0 run away from making it interesting down the stretch. I think there's reason to be encouraged for the Clips despite being down a game.

Miami Heat
It was a downright awful performance. Shooting 34 percent in a playoff game shouldn't have you close, but the Heat were there. Missed free throws, missed layups, missed opportunities. Despite playing a terrible 48 minutes, Miami had a good chance to win. I'm not sure if they should feel good about that or not because it was obvious they missed Chris Bosh. Still, subpar efforts from Dwyane Wade and LeBron down the stretch and they were only a couple buckets away from being up 2-0.

Kings improve road playoff record to 7-0, dominate Coyotes once again

The Los Angeles Kings didn't get the memo that the NHL playoffs is all about sitting back and blocking shots these days. They continued their postseason dominance on Tuesday night with a 4-0 win in Phoenix, opening up a two-game lead in the Western Conference Final, while also running their postseason record to 10-1 overall and a perfect 7-0 on the road. The Coyotes lost their cool multiple times on Tuesday night and had the look of a team that is not only overmatched in this series, but one that's growing increasingly frustrated with its inability to slow down a Los Angeles team that keeps on attacking and dominating the puck. During their Game 1 win on Sunday Los Angeles attempted an incredible 90 shots, more than any other team has attempted in a regulation game this postseason. They followed that up on Tuesday by directing 60 attempts at the Phoenix net. While Jonathan Quick gets a lot of the attention and credit, it's still all about possession for the Kings and it's a huge reason why they are just two wins away from clinching a spot in the Stanley Cup Final, and just six wins away from winning their first championship. Some quick numbers on the series to this point:

In two games the Kings have already attempted 150 shots to Phoenix's 94. This is what happens when one of the best possession teams in the league (Los Angeles) takes on one of the worst (Phoenix). The Coyotes have been in this position the entire postseason but were able to come out on top because Mike Smith outplayed his counterparts at the other end of the ice. Eventually their inability to keep the puck out of their own zone was going to come back and bit them. And right now, it is. In a big way.
It's not much better at even strength as the Kings cumalative Fenwick rating (shots on goal plus missed shots for and against) is already a plus-30 through two games.
The one player most responsible for all of this has been Anze Kopitar. He's played 27 minutes of even-strength hockey in this series and during that time Los Angeles has outshot Phoenix 28-7 and outscored the Coyotes 2-0. He also had two assists on the power play on Tuesday. Best player in the series right now.

With the way the Kings are playing right now, and with the way they've dominated the first two games, it's worth wondering if this series will see a Game 5. Especially if the Coyotes lose a couple of players to possible suspensions, as Shane Doan and Martin Hanzal were both ejected on Tuesday night for separate boarding incidents.

Brewers and Greinke love each other, but it'll be tough to keep him in Milwaukee

NEW YORK-- The Brewers' Mark Attanasio is a terrific owner who badly wants to keep star pitcher Zack Greinke in Milwaukee but understands probably better than anyone the realities of trying to sign a big-time talent in a very small market.Grienke is a terrific young man who willtalk only about the Brewers while publicly discussing his future desires. He talks about how he loves the owner, the manager, the coaches, the players, the fans. Of course, CC Sabathia and Prince Fielder felt the same way.Greinke knows the score. And while he won't say it, the Brewers probably have no better chance than a number of teams to sign Greinke into next year, and maybe even worse than one or two. Greinke's good friend Ryan Braun, the Brewers' biggest star, has seen this very play up close before. He has seen Sabathia leave via free agency, and he has seen Fielder leave, too. So when Braun speaks about Greinke's chance to stay when Greinke's already on the cusp of free agency, Braun speaks from experience. "The reality is, when a guy reaches free agency, it's more challenging to sign him,'' Braun said. "It doesn't mean there's no chance. It just means your chances are limited.''Braun isn't giving up hope entirely, though. "Absolutely,'' Braun answered to a question about whether the Brewers still have a shot to keep Greinke. "I know he's enjoyed his time here, and I think we would definitely be one of his top potential teams.''One of his top teams. One of them. That says it all right there. As of this winter, the Brewers become only one of many vying for Greinke's services.Attanasio speaks glowingly about Greinke, who shut down the Mets over seven innings in Milwaukee's 8-0 victory as the righthander improved to 4-1 with a 2.88 ERA. Those are résumé-building numbers. Those are good free-agent numbers.Greinke returns the favor, speaking just as nicely about Attanasio, who has helped create something great in Milwaukee even if he hasn't always held onto their best players. More than anything, he wants the winning to continue."It's very difficult to build a winning culture. And once you build it, you want to maintain it,'' Attanasio said. "What [general manager Doug Melvin] did was very hard. He and I would like to maintain it.''They would like to keep it going, and that's with or without Greinke, who's still only 28. The reality is there's no evidence the sides have spoken about a contract since sprining training. So naturally, there's no evidence of progress.Attanasio answered a question about whether the Brewers want to sign Greinke, who makes $13.5 million this year, this way: "Sure, why not? We'd like to keep him He's able to stop losing streaks. The team plays with a lot of confidence behind him. We'll see.''The confidence to keep him might be another matter. Matt Cain's $112.5-million, five-year extension with the Giants seemed to coincide with a break in negotiations. Greinke surely views himself as a $20 million pitcher in this marketplace, and why not? The Cain deal could only reinforce that notion, if not enhance it."I am a creature of the market, so I am attuned to the market,'' Attanasio said, allowing that the Cain contract does indeed "set a market price.''Though, Milwaukee is a very different marketplace. "Each of the teams needs to do what it can or can't do within their marketplace,'' Attanasio said. The Brewers offered Sabathia around $100 million for five years Fielder was offered $120 million over six years, and the Brewers probably would have gone higher had they been in that game. That one, they understood, was hopeless. Braun was the one big star to stay, for a $105 million, five-year extention that meant he would be a Brewer through 2020.Greinke sounded very hopeful, at least while talking about this year's chances. "It's all good,'' he said. "This team's going to start turning the corner soon. They have a bunch of really good players, five or six locked up for awhile.''Conspicuously absent from that locked-up group is Greinke, who chose to accept a trade that included no contract extension to Milwaukee when the Washington Nationals tried to entice him with an extension offer that was said to be worth $100 million. Greinke, to his credit, chose the Brewers because he felt they had a better chance to win. (Although, the Nats turned out better than he figured.)"That might have worked out better for them,'' Greinke said with a grin. "They got to keep some of their young guys. And I don't know if I could pitch as good as their guys.''The Nationals indeed look like a contender, though like the Brewers, they have been hurt this year by a rash of injuries. Milwaukee got to the playoffs last year, Greinke's first year in Milwaukee, and despite their current aches and pains, they carry a lot of youthful confidence into the remainder of their schedule."It's a good organization,'' Greinke said. "Good owner. Good guys in management. Good guys in the clubhouse. Really good, really good.''Everyone's good here. The Brewers' people are great. So is Grienke. They're all fine people. I just wouldn't bet too much on all these fine people getting together on a new $100-million-plus contract.

Brett Lawrie flips out on ump

On Tuesday, Toronto's Brett Lawrie struck out looking in the ninth with his team down by one run to the Rays. As you shall soon see, Mr. Lawrie objected rather strongly home-plate ump Doug Miller's shape-shifting strike zone.
Pacers-Heat Game 2: Funny story, Dwyane Wade 'choked,' too

Dwyane Wade struggled Tuesday night. (Getty Images)

The story is about LeBron James missing two free throws. James was scoreless the final four minutes of Game 2 vs. Indiana, and his free throws would have put the Heat up two late. It was fulfillment of the narrative everyone loves, the world's biggest ego failing in the world's biggest moments. But there's something else that needs to be noted.Dwyane Wade? Also terrible late. James was 0 of 2 in the final four minutes, but Wade was just 1 of 5, including a point blank layup against George Hil. James missed two key free throws late, Wade missed one. All this after Wade was lucky to remain in the game after clobbering Darren Collison on a flagrant foul from behind that may very well be upgraded to a flagrant two by the league. There's going to be constant talk about Mario Chalmers taking the final shot instead of LeBron, about LeBron's missed free throws, but it needs to be noted that the Heat had two superstars on the floor Tuesday night and both of them threw in rotten eggs to help the Pacers tie the first-round series. It doesn't matter which one is Robin, which one is Batman, both got the back end of a bad joke Tuesday night.

Another Coyotes ejection: Martin Hanzal kicked out for boarding Dustin Brown

With the way Game 2 went for the Phoenix Coyotes they may be without a couple of key players when the series shifts back to Los Angeles on Thursday. Not long after Shane Doan was ejected for boarding Trevor Lewis, Coyotes center Martin Hanzal joined him in the locker room for boarding Dustin Brown midway through the third period. As will be the case with Doan's hit on Lewis, there is no doubt the NHL will look at this hit. If the league decides to suspend one (or both) players for Game 3 it would be a crushing blow to their roster as they have been completely dominated over the first two games of this series. Also at Eye On HockeyShane Doan ejected for boarding Trevor LewisFor more hockey news, rumors and analysis, follow @EyeOnHockey and @agretz on Twitter and like us on Facebook.
The Pacers beat the Heat Tuesday night 78-75 in a slopfest that will be talked about tomorrow because LeBron James missed free throws. But it was the Pacers' defense and a strong third quarter that put the Pacers in the position to win the game. The Pacers outscored the Heat by .69 points per possession in the third. To put it in perspective, the Heat average 1.04 points per possession in the regular season, and scored just .67 in the third. It was incredible defense. A seven minute stretch in the third featuring LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Joel Anthony yielded a 27.7 true shooting percentage and a 26 percent turnover ratio. They turned the ball over at a clip as high as their true shooting percentage which factors threes and free throws. So basically, the Pacers played killer defense. It was an ugly, inefficient game, but the Pacers showed toughness against the Heat. That's the challenge, and when you hit Miami with that kind of grit, if things don't break open for them, they take a step back. David West is proving to be the best 4-5 player in this series, and Paul George made a series of incredible hustle plays. The Pacers won with a 38 percent field goal percentage and just a 39 percent effective field goal percentage. This game was like two razorback pigs fighting in the mud. But in the end, the Heat wound up with filth in their eyes and the Pacers were able to go for the jugular. This is a series now, with all the momentum swinging Indiana's way, as they attempt to shock the world.Closing note: After the game, with the Pacers celebrating like mad, David West went off. He was screaming at his teammates to get off the floor. This is West, who is back in the second round for the first time since 2008, who is the most consistent scorer for the Pacers in the postseason, who has lead this team with his toughness. West is making a huge difference on this teamand with Chris Bosh out, as expected, the the impact is only becoming greater. Last year the Pacers had no one to lead them, to demand that they not celebrate things like winning one game to tie a series. West isn't going to settle for just making a good showing. He wants to win.And all of a sudden, that idea doesn't seem so crazy anymore.

Angels fire hitting coach Mickey Hatcher

How long has Mickey Hatcher been on the job as Angels hitting coach? Mo Vaughn was one of his first pupils, and the franchise was but three seasons removed from being called the California Angels when he started. Yet Hatcher, in his 13th season as Mike Sciocia's hitting instructor, has been fired, the team announced. He's been replaced by Triple-A hitting coach Jim Eppley, who played for the Angels from 1987-89.
“We think the absolute world of Mickey as a person and thank him for all of his contributions to this organization,” said GM Jerry Dipoto. “Sometimes in the sports world a point is reached where perhaps a new voice is needed in order to attain the desired goals and objectives. Unfortunately we feel this is one of those times. Offensively we have underachieved and everyone shares in the responsibility of what has transpired thus far."The Angels currently rank 13th in the AL in runs scored, and, as CBSSports.com Insider Danny Knobler has noted, the Halo offense has is well on its way to making an unfortunate kind of history. This, of course, is to say nothing of Hatcher's problems with the struggling Albert Pujols.

Shane Doan ejected for boarding Trevor Lewis (video)

Things went from bad to worse for the Phoenix Coyotes on Tuesday night when Shane Doan was ejected late in the second period for boarding Trevor Lewis. Here's a look at the play that resulted in a five-minute major penalty as well as a game misconduct...Along with Doan's penalty, Daymond Langkow was also sent off for slashing Dustin Brown just before that hit. The Coyotes were already trailing 2-0 at that point, and Jeff Carterquickly scored on the power play to give the Kings a 3-0 lead. Doan's hit will no doubt get turned over to Brendan Shanahan and his team to review for any supplemental discipline.
Rams head coach Jeff Fisher 'discounted last year' for QB Sam Bradford

Fisher thinks Bradford's rookie season is indicative of his potential going forward.(US PRESSWIRE)

Shortly after the Rams put the finishing touches on a 2-14 season, there was some speculation that the organization might use their second-overall selection in April's NFL Draft on another franchise quarterback, just two years after taking Sam Bradford with the No. 1 pick in 2010. It didn't happen; instead, St. Louis traded down and stockpiled the roster with some much-needed talent. During a recent radio appearance, new Rams head coach Jeff Fisher explained why he has faith in Bradford, who struggled in 2011 after winning Rookie of the Year honors the season before. “Well, it was his ability -- what he was able to do in college, but also his rookie year. We discounted last year. I didn't pay much attention to that. There were a lot of difficult things to overcome and a lot of issues, and it made no sense dwelling on it," Fisher said via SportsRadioInterviews.com. "I think what Sam was able to do here his rookie year in that type of offense is an indication of the potential that he has.” Seems perfectly logical, but late last season during an almost unwatchable Rams-Seahawks get-together on Monday Night Football, coach-turned-analyst Jon Gruden suggested that Bradford had played so poorly that if Gruden were making personnel decisions in St. Louis, he'd take a long look at Robert Griffin III. If nothing else, this confirms the short shelf life for the next "once-in-a-lifetime" talent. Bradford was that guy a year ago. And now, after an injury-riddled second season, doubts have emerged. (We wonder how long Andrew Luck and RG3 have before people wonder if the Colts or Redskins should think about replacing them with the next shiny object that comes along.) And while Bradford's numbers were good but not great as a rookie (he completed 60 percent of his passes, tossed 18 touchdowns against 15 interceptions, and Football Outsiders ranked him 34th in QB efficiency), he was also playing for a team that went 1-15 the year before he arrived. (Still, he had his detractors.)Lucky for Bradford, Fisher and general manager Les Snead used the extra draft picks to add big-play threats (WR Brian Quick and RB Isaiah Pead in the second round, and WR Chris Givens in the fourth round) and bolster one of the league's worst defenses (DL Michael Brockers in Round 1, CB Janoris Jenkins in Round 2 and CB Trumaine Johnson in Round 3).Now all the Rams have to do is go out starting winning football games, something that hasn't happened on a regular basis in nine years.
NBA Playoffs: Without Chris Bosh, are the Heat finished?

Without Chris Bosh, LeBron James and Dwyane Wade have a razor thin margin for error. (US Presswire)

What an amazing turn of events in the past couple days. The NBA's whipping boy, Chris Bosh, has all of a sudden become evidently one of the most important players in the league. Not long ago was Bosh the focus of complaints, gripes and grumbles. He doesn't rebound, doesn't score inside, doesn't do his part. Some of that, absolutely true at times. But as Game 2 against the Pacers showcased, Bosh's value to the currently constructed Heat is priceless. Bosh is out "indefinitely" with an abdominal strain, but the consensus is that it will likely be four weeks, at least. One week though, might be too long.

Consider this: In the first playoff game of the Big 3 era in Miami, the third highest scorer for the Heat had five points. Five. Bosh has his faults, has his blemishes and has things he could do better, but he would've scored more than five points. As you watched the Miami offense sputter late in the second half looking for shots, all I could picture was Bosh pick-and-popping for an easy 18-foot jumper. There's no doubt he would've hit at least one, probably two and maybe three in the last three minutes of that game. Something as simple as that little added option is what has separated the Heat. Still, the Heat should've won regardless. They missed layups, free throws, didn't grab rebounds and did a heap of things that helped give the game to Indiana. The series should probably be 2-0, but regardless of that, the question has now become, can the Heat win without Chris Bosh? At this point, that question has to be recalibrated. It was, "Can the Heat win an NBA title if Chris Bosh is out?" but now is, "Can the Heat beat the Pacers without Chris Bosh?" Because it's obvious: There are problems. There are problems inside defending David West and Roy Hibbert. Issues on the glass where the Pacers were a plus-10 on the boards. Issues with the offense where the Heat didn't have any extra options, no bailout late in the clock. Game 2 might've revealed enough to make you wonder about the Heat right now. LeBron and Wade's margin for error has been greatly decreased. Because look at that roster sans Bosh. Their third best player: Mario Chalmers? Shane Battier? Udonis Haslem? Think about that. Mario Chalmers is probably the third best player on a team that's supposed to be contending for an NBA title. The third best player in Oklahoma City? James Harden. Third best player in San Antonio? Manu Ginobili (or Tim Duncan, whatever). Lakers, Andrew Bynum. Boston, Paul Pierce/Rajon Rondo/Ray Allen. Heck, I'm sure the Heat would prefer Caron Butler, Thaddeus Young or Paul George by leaps and bounds over Chalmers to play their third fiddle. The whole plan in Miami was concocted around a team built with three heads, and some tentacles that could do just enough. It was never part of the blueprint to call one of those arms up. It became very obvious, very quickly, how thin the Heat really are. They have no depth. None. They have an incredible tandem in LeBron and Wade -- two superstars who can carry the load and do great things -- but those two have to be near perfect now. The Heat might have enough to get by the Pacers behind LeBron and Wade, but the Celtics? The Spurs or Thunder? Chris Bosh might've been the scapegoat in Miami, might've been the guy that everyone thought should be traded, the black sheep of the group, but he clearly was extremely valuable to their success. If any team suffered an injury to one of their three best players, it would be a blow. But to the Heat, it looks catastrophic.

RB Harrison place on reserve/non-football injury list

Detroit placed RB Jerome Harrison on the reserve/non-football illness list Tuesday. Harrison hasn't played since a brain tumor was discovered during a routine physical after he was traded to the Eagles for RB Ronnie Brown at the 2011 trade deadline. The diagnosis voided the trade, and Harrison was placed on the 2011 non-football injury list. Harrison has a year remaining on his contract, requiring him to be placed on the list again in 2012. The move gives Harrison another year of credited NFL experience and clears roster space for the signing of undrafted free agents WR Wallace Miles and S Sam Proctor.
With the Pacers leading 76-75 and 54.1 seconds to go, James grabbed an offensive rebound and was fouled by Pacers forward Danny Granger. After Granger headed to the bench, having picked up his sixth foul, James took to the charity stripe for two shots, having already scored 28 points, grabbed 9 rebounds, dished out 5 assists and registered 6 steals. The 2012 NBA MVP's first attempt hit the back rim and swerved off. His second attempt also hit back rim and bounced out. Pacers wing Paul George corralled the rebound and immediately called timeout.James played 43 minutes on Tuesday night. After the game, Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said that fatigue could have been a contributing factor on the misses."He'll never make an excuse for that, but I wish I could have gotten him a minute or two [of rest] in the fourth quarter," Spoelstra said. "Because of the hole we dug for ourselves, there was no way to do it."James, a career 74.6 percent free throw shooter, was 8-for-13 from the line in Game 2."Those last two didn't go for me," he said, according to FoxSportsFlorida.com. "The game isn't lost or won with those two free throws but I definitely want to come through for my teammates. But I'll get another opportunity. I know I'll be at line again in that situation."After Indiana hit two free throws and a potential game-tying three from Heat guard Mario Chalmers missed, the Pacers escaped with a 78-75 win to even the series at one game apiece.Game 3 is set for Indiana on Thursday.

P Hartmann praised by coach

P Brett Hartmann received high praise from ST coach Joe Marciano in a Tuesday interview on Sportsradio 610 in Houston. "He's the best kickoff guy I've ever seen, and I've been around doing this a long time (1986)," Marciano said. "I've never seen a guy kick the ball through the uprights and hang the ball 4.6 seconds." Hartmann, recovering from a knee injury suffered late last season, will miss the first three games of the season after violating the league's policy against performance enhancing drugs.

Video: LeBron James and Danny Granger double-technical after kerfuffle in Pacers-Heat Game 2

Pacers-Heat is getting testy. Moments after Dwyane Wade gave Darren Collison a flagrant foul in the fourth quarter of Game 2, Danny Granger came over the top of LeBron James, landing with his elbow around James' neck. In response, James elbowed Granger in the ribs and then started to swing towards his head. You wonder if he had connected if we would have another Metta World Peace and James Harden situation.Granger and James both received technical fouls for the incident, and initially personal fouls, but those were later rescinded. Had James connected with that higher elbow, it could have been bad. You can understand James being upset because of the contact to his upper body and neck, but the league is really sensitive towards elbow swipes to the head. As long as the league considers that he restrained himself to stop it, he won't face any further punishment. This thing's getting personal.

Video: Dwyane Wade flagrant fouls Darren Collison

With the Pacers in charge early in the fourth quarter and Dwyane Wade struggling, the Miami superstar appeared to take some of that frustration out on guard Darren Collison. Wade was assessed a Flagrant 1 foul for the play, leading to two free throws for Collison and the ball for the Pacers. You could probably make a strong case for that to be a Flagrant 2 foul, though. A Flagrant 1 is just unnecessary contact. A Flagrant 2 is unnecessary and excessive contact. Which is what that appeared to be.There isn't a whole lot of difference between Wade's foul and what Jason Smith did to Blake Griffin. We'll see if the league reviews that play and maybe has something to say about it after the fact. It could very well be upgraded to a Flagrant 2, which doesn't mean a suspension but is obviously more severe.

New Big 12 commish Bob Bowlsby prefers to 'pause' realignment

Bob Bowlsby hasn't even taken over the reins of the Big 12, but he has been thrown into the unpredictable, unbelievable and turbulent world of realignment nevertheless. In an interview with USA Today on Tuesday, the incoming commissioner said he would prefer to hit the pause button on the whole realignment issue in light of Florida State's possible interest in joining the league, but he said he understands that he is only one voice at the table."My opinion," Bowlsby said, "is college athletics would be well served by some period of smooth water and not all of the angst and disorganization that goes with moves from one league to another."Still Stanford's athletic director for the next few weeks, Bowlsby didn't directly address Florida State Board of Trustees Chairman Andy Haggard saying that the school should at least consider other options beyond the ACC (i.e. the Big 12). ThoughFSU president Eric Barron released a statement on Monday downplaying the remarks, realignment is no doubt on the minds of everyone thanks to the Seminoles as conferences head into meetings over the next few weeks."I think the topic of expansion will be on every agenda going forward," Bowlsby said. "But it's on every other conference's agenda going forward, too."Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds, who holds considerable sway with the league, doused the idea of Florida State joining the league by telling the Austin American Statesman that "there's no traction." Either way, it appears that Bowlsby understands that realignment, or staying put, will be item No. 1 on his agenda upon taking over on June 15.

Bulls pick up option on Thibodeau, but the chess match continues

Tom Thibodeau had his option picked up.Getty Images!

The Bulls are notorious for playing hardball with negotiations. Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen, Phil Jackson, Ben Gordon, Joakim Noah --the list goes on. At the end of the regular season, Tom Thibodeau had not been signed to an extension, despite the fact that he earned the best regular season record in his conference two years in a row with a team hit hard by injuries. Thibodeau repeatedly sloughed off suggestions regarding reports that he was unhappy with the situation. Now it appears that the Bulls are taking care of the problem in the short-term while still promising to get the job done in the long-term. From the AP:

General manager Gar Forman says the Chicago Bulls will exercise their contract option for next season on coach Tom Thibodeau and will try to negotiate a new deal.
Forman says Thibodeau is "one of the finest coaches in the league" and the Bulls are "hopeful he'll be our coach long-term." He spoke Tuesday at a news conference to update Derrick Rose's recovery from knee surgery.

viaBulls GM: We'll pick up Thibodeau's option, negotiate new deal - NBA - CBSSports.com News, Scores, Stats, Fantasy Advice. It's possible that this is what's actually going on, that Thibodeau will have a new deal by the end of the summer. But why hasn't a discussion already been held? The option year gives them more time to work on bringing down Thibodeau's value. This is important. Bulls ownership has never been comfortable with paying coaches top value. (Again, freaking Phil Jackson had a dispute with them over money after winning five titles.)The Bulls aren't the type of organization that lets good coaches go because owner Jerry Reinsdorf is cheap. They're the kind that pushes their talent to the furthest limit and then gets the guy they were going to get from the beginning for less than market value because of their draconian approach. This gives them more time. There's one more element here. Thibodeau has won the most games in the East two years in a row. His team plays consistently, brilliantly, and features the best defensive system in the league. They are a legitimate title contender when healthy. But they have not made the Finals. The first year, Noah wasn't 100 percent, Rose was beat up and exhausted, and the Miami Heat were really, really good. This year, obviously, Derrick Rose tore his ACL and that was that. But questions lingered throughout the year about the minutes the team's stars played, with Rose sometimes logging 38-minutes-plus in his first game back from repeated injuries. You can't blame Thibodeau for a freak injury like the ACL. But the cumulative time lost did raise an eyebrow given Thibodeau's sometimes obsessive approach to winning and commitment. The Bulls never paced themselves. Not with Luol Deng'storn wrist ligament, not with Rose's myriad injuries, not with the Bulls' intensity. If anything is going to give the Bulls pause about going all in with Thibodeau, that has to at least be on the radar.

Tony Stewart discusses Talladega comments

Tony Stewart revisited the remarks he made after the Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway when he was a guest on SPEED's "Race Hub" program.Host Steve Byrnes asked Stewart what point he was trying to make with his rather sarcastic take on the second restrictor plate race of the season."It's hard. It is hard for NASCAR to find a package that everybody likes," Stewart said of the restrictor plate rule package the sanctioning body has employed this season that included changes to the engine cooling system. "It's hard to find something the drivers like; it is hard to find something the fans like. It's a difficult position for them to be in."It's already hard enough running 200 mph, touching each other around the race track. It's harder to do that, then having to stare at gauges all day long, and having to try to find clean pockets of air to cool your car off. People said I was whining too much about it, but the people who are whining are sitting behind computer screens and telephones, and have never driven a car (at) 200 mph, to know what we are talking about. It was a lot more than what we needed to deal with."Stewart said part of his issue with racing at both Daytona and Talladega is not being able to dictate his driving style as much as falling victim to the circumstances of drafting while at the same time maintaining an engine temperature to avoid overheating.
"That, and there's nothing that differentiates the better cars than from the ones that aren't as good," Stewart said of plate racing. "Qualifying does that, but once you get into the race, the slowest car in the field has just as good of a shot at winning the race than the fastest driver in the field does. You want to have that control as a driver… to control your own destiny. But at the same time, it's not the way it is a restrictor plate races. It hasn't been that way for the 14 years that I've been in this series."That said Stewart understands the difficult position NASCAR is in trying to create a competitive environment for drivers as well as pleasing fans who have voiced their displeasure with the tandem drafting style."But at the same time, like I say, it's hard for NASCAR to find that balance," Stewart said. "You can't have us running 220 mph out there, so you have to do something. If there was an easy solution, NASCAR would have found it by now. It just seems like we keep adding things to the equation that make it more difficult. Make it unnecessary, and that aren't really changing the racing, but making it more complicated inside the car."

Mike Bellamy's career at Clemson over, academics force him to Juco

Expectations were high for running back Mike Bellamy ever since he signed with Clemson out of high school as one of the country's top recruits, but a promising career is over just as it began. The school announced on Tuesday that the tailback had been ruled academically ineligible and will transfer to a junior college this summer. It's been a bumpy journey with the Tigers for the rising sophomore, who re-joined the team after being suspended indefinitely following a violation of team rules in December. Coaches praised Bellamy's work during practice the past few weeks and expected him to play a big role on offense this season as Clemson looks to repeat as ACC Champions.
“Iam proud of the improvementsMike Bellamymade in the spring semester in a number of areas,” coach Dabo Swinney said in a statement. “We gave him the opportunity to return to school in January and to grow as a player and a person and, by all accounts from his teammates and coaches, he was doing well.
“But, in the end, he came up short academically. We wish him well and hope he can get back on track in the classroom and continue his football career at a junior college this fall.”
Swinney previously said Bellamy has “kept his mouth shut” this spring and likely would have entered fall camp as the No. 2 running back. Last season as a true freshman, he was second on the team in rushing with 343 yards before his suspension, and he was known as a home-run threat with his speed and ability to turn the corner. Coming out of high school, Bellamy was ranked as the fifth-best running back in the class of 2011 by MaxPreps and given a five-star rating.Freshman back Zac Brooks could see increased playing time this year given how thin the position is with senior Andre Ellington coming off of minor ankle surgery that held him out of the Tigers' spring game. The release made no mention of wide receiver Sammy Watkins, who is currently suspended following an arrest on drug charges.

Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey: Blaine Gabbert is our starting QB

Henne, at least for now, is No. 2 on the depth chart.(US PRESSWIRE)

When the Jaguars signed Chad Henne to a two-year deal back in March, it was reasonable to assume that he'd be given a chance to earn the starting job. Blaine Gabbert had been atrocious as a rookie, although some of that can be blamed on the general ineptitude of Jacksonville's offense. According to new head coach Mike Mularkey, there's no confusion: Gabbert's the Jags' No. 1. "No, it's not (a competition)," he told NFL Network's Albert Breer. "Blaine's our starting quarterback. ... "I've seen improvement over the short time I've been with him, and (in the spring) you get coaching and teaching in a less stressful environment," Mularkey said. "We're working on some of the fundamentals in his drops now. Not saying that he was taught it wrong, but every coach has their beliefs. None of them are wrong, but we need to be on the same page on some of those things, and we already started working on that in April. Primarily, it's his drops and balance in the pocket." One of the biggest criticisms against Gabbert last season was that he was timid in the pocket. Either way, everyone isn't sold on Mularkey's proclamation, probably because it's May and a lot can change in the coming months. One such skeptic: SI.com's Don Banks, who wrote Tuesday afternoon that "Blaine Gabbert will lose his starting quarterback job to Chad Henne by Week 3 (of the preseason)."Banks was just getting warmed up:"Remember when the Jaguars were trying to decide how much they wanted to go after Tim Tebow in trade earlier this offseason, a competition they ultimately lost to the New York Jets? There were those inside the Jacksonville organization who were ambivalent about the move, believing that even with Tebow on board, Henne, the ex-Dolphins starter, would beat out both players by late August. Let's just say that sentiment hasn't changed with Henne now competing only against Gabbert, the team's first-round pick in 2011." It's hard to argue with that. Henne wasn't in the Dolphins' long-term plans, but most people figured he wouldn't have trouble finding work. The NFL has evolved into a passing league, but that only holds for those teams with a franchise quarterback. And while Henne isn't that, he is serviceable, which is more than we can say for Gabbert after one season. Not only that, offseasons are littered with examples of coaches saying one thing only to change their minds in August and September. Remember when Tim Tebow was the Broncos' 2011 starter before he wasn't (and then, ultimately, he was)? That's all we're saying. Whoever ends up under center in Jacksonville, they'll enjoy the benefit of actual pass-catching wide receivers. The team signed Laurent Robinson and drafted Justin Blackmon. Maybe those additions will help Gabbert keep his job. If not, we're guessing Henne will be ready.
Josh Beckett pitches a gem, but where's his fastball?

Insofar as Josh Beckett's line against the Mariners on Wednesday (7.0 IP, 0 R, 4 H, 9 K, 2 BB; 60 of 93 pitches for strikes) is concerned, all is well. Beckett, coming off a controversy-tinged blow-up against the Indians, needed a vintage outing, if for no other reason than to earn back some currency with Boston fans and sports-media town criers. More important, though, he pitched the Red Sox to their fifth-straight victory and nudged them closer to the psychologically significant .500 mark. That's good for Boston's purposes, but what remains a concern is Beckett's diminished velocity. Over the last five seasons and change, Beckett has averaged 94.77 mph on the four-seamer that he's thrown a plurality of the time over that span. That's what we've come to expect from Beckett when he's at his best: a reliance on hard stuff that is, you know, hard. Here, then, are his velo numbers from that aforementioned "disaster" start against the Indians on May 10 (charts courtesy of BrooksBaseball.net): As you can see, Beckett's heater against Cleveland was down by almost 2.75 mph from established norms. That's not good, and it's very much a cause for hand-wringing moving forward. But Tuesday's gem surely entailed better gun readings, right? Well ... While the box score was decidedly more alluring from Beckett's standpoint, the velocity charts were not. His fastball is down even more, almost another half-mile-per-hour, even if the results don't reflect it (facing the Mariner offense can forgive many a pitching sin). As David Cameron of FanGraphs has pointed out, a drop in velocity is often prelude to injury diagnosis. Given that Beckett, a, has a lengthy injury history and, b, has already been battling a (golf-permissive) lat injury this season, all of this is a bit worrisome. Yes, Beckett pitched like an ace on Tuesday, but there's still cause to believe that something's not right with him.
Vance Worley to miss Wednesday start with elbow soreness

Phillies right-hander Vance Worley was supposed to make his next start on Wednesday against the Cubs. However, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports that Worley has been scratched from that start because of elbow soreness. He hasn't accompanied the team to Chicago, and he'll be examined further on Wednesday. “I'm not worried," Worley said of the news. "I just want to confirm what it is. That's all.”Kyle Kendrick will start in place of Worley, and, if a move is necessary, then Joe Savery will likely replace him on the active roster. While Worley gets easily overlooked as a member of the same rotation as Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Cole Hamels, it should not be forgotten that Worley boasts a career ERA of 2.91 in 188.1 innings. If he's lost for a significant amount of time, it'll be a blow to the already hobbled Phillies. On another level, while panic would be premature, the only thing worse than having a pitcher's elbow make the news is having his shoulder make the news.
LB Jeff Luc leaving FSU, looking at short list of new schools

Jeff Luc was granted permission to transfer from Florida State, and Kansas State, South Carolina, Cincinnati and Tennessee State have shown interest in the former four-star linebacker recruit, according to TCPalm.Rated the No. 15 outside linebacker prospect for the 2014 class by NFLDraftScout.com, Luc was the No. 1 linebacker recruit in the country in 2010 by Rivals.com. But he said he turned out not to be a great fit for the Seminoles' scheme, and parted wayson good terms."I probably didn't fit in their scheme as well as they thought I was going to," Luc told TCPalm. "(Transferring) was strictly business, it wasn't personal. I didn't want to talk about it at first, but it wasn't personal at all. I left on good terms - coach Fisher shook my hand and I texted the linebackers coach (Greg Hudson on Thursday)."He leaves with just 23 tackles in 19 games, but the 6-foot-1, 242-pounder hopes to resurrect his once promising career. That Tennessee Stateis on the short list of teams is notable in that Luc wouldn't have to sit out aseason.

Seahawks sign former Rams 1st-rounder OT Alex Barron

Barron gets another shot to play in the NFL, this time with the Seahawks.(US PRESSWIRE)

The possible bad news arrived over the weekend when Dan Pompei of the National Football Post wrote that "A decent chance exists that Seahawks' 2011 first-round pick James Carpenter will not play in 2012 because his knee was torn up so severely last season. The Seahawks have protected themselves at the right tackle position by re-signing Breno Giacomini and Paul McQuistan and adding free agent Frank Omiyale. Carpenter has had a hard time mentally with the recovery process but had a recent spurt in which he made some good progress." On Tuesday, the Seahawks addedanother name to the depth chart: tackle Alex Barron, also a former first-rounder (by the Rams in '05). The difference: Barron was known as a penalty machine during his six-year career, and he missed the 2011 season while rehabbing a knee injury. Our lasting memory of Barron is from Week 1 of the 2010 season, Cowboys vs. Redskins:

Ah, yes, those halcyon days back when Donovan McNabb still seemed like a good fit in Washington and the inflated hopes and dreams of Redskins' fans had yet to be crushed by the McNabb-Grossman-Shanahan(s) train wreck. While McNabb's waiting for another chance in the NFL, Barron took advantage of his opportunity last weekend, performing well enough in Seattle's rookie minicamp to earn a contract. Seahawks fan and Shutdown Corner editor Doug Farrar wasn't ready to call the move an indication that the Seahawks were moving on without Carpenter in 2012, but he did acknowledge "a lot of contingency plans" until Carpenter's situation becomes clearer. For, Barron, he's just happy to be back in the league. “I just wanted to get somewhere,” he told Seahawks.com. “I'm pretty confident in my play. I've made some mistakes in the past, also. But I've gotten to the point where after last season, and coming into the offseason as a free agent, all I want to do is come in and just show that I can play. Because it can't be talked about, it always has to be shown.” Coach Pete Carroll sounded impressed, too. “He did a nice job,” he said Sunday. “He's been around the block, and you could tell that. He did enough good things that we could see that he could have a chance, so we'll see where that fits. But he did a good job in this camp.” That's the good. The bad, however, is probably what gave other tackle-needy teams pause. In five seasons with the Rams, Barron started 76 games, was called for 63 penalties (including 43 false starts) and 33 sacks.
A Barkley view of USC football

LOS ANGELES – When you think about it, it was one hell of a prank.
USC quarterback Matt Barkley lured Lane Kiffin and wife Layla to his Newport Beach home five months ago. Didn't say why.
“He says ‘Bring Layla,' so it must be something big,” USC's coach recalled.
What Kiffin didn't know about was a Barkley family tradition. The Barkleys make homemade ornaments each year to commemorate family events. On the day in question, the USC quarterback handed one such ornament to Kiffin.
“I made this ornament just for you,” Barkley said to his coach, “just so we could look back on the year we had.”
Kiffin then flipped it over and realized the significance. The quarterback coveted by the NFL and keeping USC's program hanging in the balance, had written: “One more year.”
At that point it was done. One of the greatest quarterbacks at a great quarterback school was going to complete his eligibility. Trojan Nation was relieved. But Kiffin wasn't going to let the prank die. He then called AD Pat Haden, telling him to call Barkley. The intimation being that Barkley had gone to the NFL.
The elaborate scam went on for more than half an hour as calls were exchanged.
“No, no, I'm coming back,” Barkley finally told Haden.
“Immediately, I was so pissed at Kiffin. He was just yanking my chain,” Haden said. “So I called him and I fired him for about 15 minutes.”
That bit of "news" has yet to be reported in what might be the most turbulent two years in USC football history. June 10 marks the two-year anniversary of the NCAA penalties that remain the sun around which everything in the football program continues to orbit.
Barkley came backdespitethose penalties.
USC won double digit games in 2011 for the first time since 2008despitethe penalties.
The Trojans are favored by some to be preseason No. 1despitethe penalties.
In the next few months, the pranks will dwindle. It's time to get serious. This week Barkley and 15 teammates are on a mission trip to Haiti, building homes. A time to bond before the season starts. As we get there, we allow you inside a discussion of the state of USC football and Barkley recently conducted at the school. On hand, at one time or another, were Haden, Kiffin, Barkley and his parents Les and Bev.
CBSSports.com:Matt is known for his faith. Is there a fair comparison in there to Tim Tebow?
Haden:“He doesn't wear it on his sleeve [as much as Tebow]. I don't dislike Tim Tebow at all, great role model. Matt has a way of doing it in his own private way.”
Matt Barkley:“I'd say we're two very different people. He's a very charismatic personality. I don't like running around fist-bumping the crowd. A lot of people act like he's the first person to do that posture [Tebowing]. He's definitely genuine about what he does. I admire him for not backing down.”

CBSSports.com:You were once at where Matt is now. What's it like being a senior, starting quarterback at USC?
Haden:“I was living off campus with a bunch of regular students. I didn't have visions of playing pro football. It was a different time and place. It's always fun being a quarterback of a major college team when things are going great.”

CBSSports.com:Did Matt consult you about coming back for his senior season?
Haden:“I talked to Matt and his parents in this room. We didn't say, ‘Please come back.' We said, ‘If you come back these are some of the things we'll try to do.
‘From my standpoint, I'll try to introduce you to some of those influential people in Southern California, so post-career you'll know these people. You'll know what these careers are about. One of our board members, [venture capitalist] Mark Stevens, started Google and Yahoo and PayPal.'
‘When you take your classes in the fall, let's find some really cool, unique classes. Something you never ever have a chance to take.' I'm not sure that's the reason he came back, but … he's not interested in money or worldly things. I think he's going to have a year where he has a real blast. He was here during some really rough moments of the probation.”

CBSSports.com:What was your initial reaction when Matt announced he was coming back?
Receiver Robert Woods:“Let's just start right now. We have so much potential. I guess the selfish thing is to win a national championship.”

CBSSports.com (to Lane Kiffin):Describe how you dealt with the penalties the day they came down.
Kiffin:“We had a team meeting that day. I told them, ‘There are worse things that are going to happen in your life. Last year the entire team believed and operated under that. We don't talk about it, because if you talk about it you give them an excuse not to play great.”
Bev Barkley:“You don't realize the Pac-10 is going to become the Pac-12 and then there is going to be a Pac-12 championship that they can't play in.
“You think at first, ‘Oh, there is the appeal. This is so draconian. Of course they're going to pull back on it and they're going to let us play in a bowl game.' It was really weighty the first year. You'd go places like the Hawaii game [in 2010]. They were chanting that they were cheaters.”

CBSSports.com:What's this time been like? I know there was a cookout at your place with players a couple of days after the sanctions came down in 2010.
Bev Barkley:“I've got the sacred journals. Someday there will be a book. I've written off and on, definitely every day for the last four years. Every game, every story, every anecdote. It's in there.”
Matt Barkley:“She's a great writer too.”

CBSSports.com (to Matt):You and your family visited Nigeria during one of your mission trips. I read where a bomb went off at a city you were staying the previous day.
Matt Barkley:“Danger is something you have to consider. When you do have faith in a higher power that is bigger than yourself, you don't have anything to fear.”

CBSSportsLine (to Les Barkley moments after he had stepped off a flight from a mission trip to Haiti):“Hope Force International does quick strike disaster relief. I'm flying back here and I'm sitting next to a guy, we're talking. Two minutes later, the in-flight screen says ‘Hope Flight International'. There's a picture of me holding a baby, a Haitian baby.
“I set this medical team up in the yard of a Catholic hospital. It's completely pancaked. They treated about 3,000 people. People were lined up down the street to be seen by doctors. This 16-year-old girl gave birth on the street waiting to see our doctors. I'm holding the baby.
“The guy on the flight goes, ‘That's you.'

CBSSports.com:What are the players going to do while they're in Haiti?
Les Barkley:“They're going to build four houses -- 200-something square foot houses. There have been about 40 of them already. These families have been living in tarps for two years. Good for the boys because they're going to leave giving these families a house.
“It's going to be great for these guys to see this. Then they come back and hopefully they have a heart to serve further. It's neat they're all going down together … If the team is able to do what they are potentially capable of doing, what a grand story.”

CBSSports.com:Describe your son's decision process when Matt was considering the NFL.
Les Barkley:“I said to Matt after the season, ‘OK, I have to take off and go overseas for a week or so. You just kind of decompress.'
“I said, ‘I'm going to put you in front of people. You're going to have the brain bucket and the heart bucket. What you're giving up monetarily to stay [versus] all the variables.' After a couple of weeks, he said, ‘Enough.' I said, ‘Now it's up to you. You can make a brain decision, you can make a heart decision or you can make a brain/heart decision, but you can't get any more facts.' “

CBSSports.com:So how did it finally go down?
Les Barkley:“He said, ‘I can't do it' [go to the NFL]

CBSSports.com:How has the probation affected the team?
Les Barkley:“I think it was unfair what happened. From everything I can surmise, I think the level of the sanctions were unfair. And they continue to impact a lot of people. One of the things that always struck me, there should be a better way to do it … The fact that these young men have weathered through this, is a great story for them.”

CBSSports.com:Before any of that happened, Pete Carroll left after Matt's first season. Offensive coordinator Steve Sarkisian left for the Washington job. Matt had been close to both.
Les Barkley:“I said, ‘OK get over it. It's going to happen again. It happens in business.' When Pete left, everybody went dead. That's when Matt said, ‘I've got to call recruits. He called [recruit] Kyle Prater. He was up at the football office by himself. I think he took on some responsibility early on with USC.”
“In Matt's early years, there were some pretty pretentious, prima-donna types on the team. I just don't see it on this team.”
