Report: Rob Gronkowski will open camp on PUP

Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski underwent surgery on his back Tuesday, a procedure that the team expected him to have but not this late in the offseason.

ESPN reported Gronkowski's surgery was delayed because of the issues he had with his forearm earlier in the year. As a result it "does seem certain," according to NFL Insider Adam Schefter that Gronkowski will begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list.

Gronkowski could potentially stay on the PUP list through the first six weeks of the season.

Giants RB coach preaches competition, tandem

Giants running back coach Jerald Ingram confirmed what most Fantasy owners already assumed: Second-year speedster David Wilson and big back Andre Brown will compete for playing time but both will wind up getting work. The key on how those reps will be split might come down to just how improved Wilson's pass protection skills are.

Ingram on Wilson: "He's in a position to compete to be the guy. He has the talent, has the speed, has a few plays from a year ago underneath his belt. Everything we gauge is kind of like in college with spring ball, but once we put the pads on, we'll see who is physical, who's determined to make plays out there."

Ingram on Brown: "He's been waiting a lifetime around here (to play). We brought him in here because he can catch the ball, he can run, he can do a lot of things and be a complete running back here. And he's definitely a true every down kind of guy because he's got size, speed and quickness."

Ingram wrapped up his comments to ESPN by hinting that the Giants will utilize both backs in a "thunder and lightning-type situation."

Does risk/reward factor make Darren McFadden draft-worthy?

Every year we find reasons to like Darren McFadden and every year he finds a way to disappoint us. In 2011 he totaled five touchdowns and over 750 yards in seven games before messing up his foot. In 2012 he managed to stay healthy for 12 games (tied for the second-most in his career) but sported the worst rushing average of his career and scored a total of three times.

This year McFadden enters training camp for the Raiders healthy and with dollar signs in his eyes. If he has a sensational year he will land a nice chunk of change from a team probably not called the Raiders because of their salary cap issues. If he doesn't, he could still earn a decent contract but probably will be used in a part-time role elsewhere in the league. McFadden has to know this and should put up a good effort. Helping his case is an Oakland coaching staff that redesigned the offense to his strengths including scrapping the zone-blocking scheme that seemingly baffled McFadden last year.

McFadden's always a risky proposition -- just ask the Fantasy owners who took him the past two seasons -- but a late Round 3/early Round 4 selection might be the right price for a player aiming for a monster showcase season.

Is Jermichael Finley worth a late-round pick?

Last year Jermichael Finley made more headlines for his drops than his outstanding play. He finished with two touchdowns and under 700 yards for the Packers. But in 2011 he was in a contract year and posted career-highs in yardage (767) and touchdowns (eight), even though he had only six games with eight-plus Fantasy points and four came in his final five that season.

Finley is once again entering a contract year with much to prove. Reports this offseason say he's looked "excellent" after putting on some weight and could be in line for plenty of playing time with a bump in targets with Greg Jennings, Donald Driver and Tom Crabtree no longer part of the Green Bay passing game. While it's tough to expect him to finally break out after several seasons of him being called a "breakout candidate," Finley isn't a bad late-round choice as part of a tight end tandem for Fantasy owners. It's a darn good bargain considering where people drafted him in previous years.

Kenny Britt heading for make-or-break year?

Kenny Britt is entering the most important training camp of his career free of legal woes and injuries. His timing's perfect -- he's entering a contract year. As I noted in my list of Fantasy players motivated for a big payday, Britt has the most to gain and lose among those with expiring contracts. He's never had more than 45 catches or 775 yards in a single year but he also has made some incredible plays when he has played without limitations.

Britt had eight or more Fantasy points in four of his last six games last season and began 2011 with a pair of double-digit Fantasy point efforts before tearing his ACL. The thinking here is that Britt could focus on his game for one year to net a large payout (or at least a franchise tag) from the Titans. Who knows how reliable he'll be after that but for 2013, Fantasy owners shouldn't shy away from him in drafts. He's worth the mid-round gamble.

Malcom Floyd 'running different routes'

Chargers receiver Malcom Floyd is taking on a new role in the team's up-tempo offense, The Union-Tribune of San Diego reports. In it, the passing is meant to be shorter and more accurate without as many long throws, which is what Floyd was accustomed to previously.

"I'm running different routes," Floyd said. "These coaches are really working on my lateral ability, a lot of these drills this offseason, getting in and out of my breaks. It's details like foot placement on curl routes, reprogramming my brain. ... I'm 10 years old in this league, but I feel a lot better than last year. I'm very excited about this upcoming year."

Maurice Jones-Drew says his ankle is healed

Jaguars running back Maurice Jones-Drew said his foot is healed following offseason surgery and rehab for a Lisfranc injury. He's now focused on strengthening his ankle and running. By doing these things he can lose any excess weight he put on during the offseason.

"The weight's going to come off as I work out," Jones-Drew told the official team website. "All I could do (after surgery) was eat. With this injury, you don't want to break the screws and have to get the surgery over again. I couldn't move."

Finally, Jones-Drew likens this offseason to the one he had before his 2011 season when he came back from microfracture surgery and led the league in rushing. He's especially optimistic because he had only 100 touches last season (86 carries).

Will Philip Rivers be 'great'?

Chargers head coach Mike McCoy told the Union-Tribune of San Diego that quarterback Philip Rivers will have a "great" season. After posting some of his worst career numbers in 2012, that might be hard to believe.

Throwing to a suspect receiving corps and playing behind a poor offensive line, Rivers looked pedestrian. He averaged 6.8 yards per attempt and had five-year lows in passing yardage and touchdowns. While the team should have enough receiving weapons around the quarterback while arming him with a safer-but-faster offensive gameplan this season, questions about Rivers' arm remain valid after many of his passes looked like wounded ducks.

Almost no one will trust Rivers as a starter in Fantasy, but not many folks should look at him as a blue-chip backup either. After posting just four games with 20-plus Fantasy points last season, there are simply too many other quarterbacks worth the late-round pick one would use on a backup. As such, Rivers should end up going undrafted in smaller leagues and even some larger 12-team basic formats.

Chargers receiver Vincent Brown looked "spectacular" during offseason workouts, The Union-Tribune San Diego noticed. Brown broke his left ankle last summer and missed the entire 2012 season.

He's since fully healed and seems to be the tall, jump-ball receiver who plays fast. That's a much-needed player for the Chargers offense.

'Time will tell' if Jonathan Stewart will be ready for camp

Ronnie Hillman says he can shoulder the load

With an estimated 15 pounds of muscle added this offseason, Broncos running back Ronnie Hillman told NFL Network he believes he can handle being the primary rushing option this season ahead of veteran Knowshon Moreno and rookie Montee Ball.

"Of course you hear [criticism]," Hillman said about being too small to handle the amount of reps a starting running back gets. "I'm not going to sit here and say I don't hear what they say, but you just got to let it go. Obviously, getting 22 carries in negative-13 degree weather against the Ravens (in the divisional playoffs), they shouldn't have much else to say about that if they're paying attention."

Hillman noted that he's actually younger than Ball and that the coaches would prefer he slim down 5-10 pounds. Perhaps the weight issue is because the team doesn't want him to trade his explosiveness for his bulk.

That's because both Derek Newton and Brennan Williams, two guys expected to compete for the job, didn't participate in OTAs or minicamp.

"If you look at our roster, it looks good, but the bottom line is the guys aren't out there, so that's concerning for us as a team and me as a coach," Kubiak said last Thursday. "I love the way Newton has worked. I think he made a lot of progress as a player last year. He played hurt at the end of the year, which was tough on him and us as a team. We drafted a young man with a lot of ability (Williams). He hasn't been out here yet."

Newton is a former seventh-round pick who started 14 games last season before suffering a patellar tendon injury. Williams hurt his knee in minicamp in May.

Veteran Ryan Harris and rookie David Quessenberry split reps at right tackle this spring.

"(Right tackle) is (a concern)," Kubiak said. "I think it is for the guys up front, too. Our four starters are locked in up front, putting Brandon in with those guys. I think even those guys are looking, thinking, 'OK, who's it going to be? Who's going to step up and take this job and play here for the next 10 years and play right tackle for the Texans?' So I think we're all watching that. I think Newton took a step towards doing that last year, and now he has to take another big step."

He told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram he'll get the cast off in a week and wear a brace. Randle also said he's put on close to 10 pounds since last year. He's expected to be ready for the start of training camp.

"There’s not many things you can really control," Austin said per the Dallas Morning News. "You can control your effort, but other things are going to happen. I've always been working on my conditioning since I got here. I feel really good right now, hopefully it stays that way."

Richardson ready to compete

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Rams running back Daryl Richardson is ready to compete for the starting job with Isaiah Pead and Zac Stacy. “I’m definitely working toward a bigger role," Richardson said. “I’m excited about getting a chance to show the coaching staff what I can do. I definitely feel like I can be the starter, but I guess that’s something that will be decided in training camp. We’re all friends, working to push each other and to make each other better, but we’re also all trying to be that No. 1 guy." Coach Jeff Fisher acknowledged that getting Richardson more involved, whether he starts or not, is a priority. “We have to get the ball to him in the passing game more than we did (in 2012)," Fisher said. “We were spreading it out, but we weren’t necessarily going to the backs as much as we would’ve liked. Any time we can get Daryl the ball in space, it’s going to put added pressure on the other team."

Broyles participated fully in minicamp despite the fact that he's less than six months removed from ACL surgery. The report says "he wasn't just out there running around. He was making plays across the middle of the field and really looked good." Broyles is still not 100 percent, but "he is poised for a breakout season."

Harris hopeful for start of camp

The Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports that Packers running back DuJuan Harris has no doubt he'll be participating in the first day of training camp. After having a "grapefruit"-sized, noncancerous cyst removed from his lung, Harris expects to be full go July 26. "I'll be ready," Harris said. "I'll be there." For Harris, the removal was a blessing in disguise. He would've never even known about the cyst if not for the routine check-up and now his breathing may improve without the cyst jammed up against his lungs. Harris enters training camp in competition with Eddie Lacy, Johnathan Franklin, Alex Green and James Starks. By the postseason a year ago, Harris finished as the starter. In six games, Harris rushed for 257 yards on 62 carries with four touchdowns.

Texans linebacker Brian Cushing believes he'll be cleared to resume football activities on July 17 following a check-up with noted orthopedist Dr. James Andrews. Cushing is working his way back from a torn left ACL suffered last October.

"As far as camp goes, the first day, I'll be out there; I'll be in pads," Cushing said. "As far as how much I'll do in camp, I'm not sure yet, but I know I will definitely be doing a good amount of it, try to get a preseason game in for sure, just knock some of that rust off and be 100 percent come the first game."

Injuries -- he suffered a torn Achilles as a rookie and dealt with groin and hamstring problems last year -- have caused Leshoure to struggle from week to week with his performance. “You know, I think at times last year we saw the Leshoure that we drafted and then we were too inconsistent in other games and I think that’s probably the biggest thing,” Schwartz said. “I think his biggest room for improvement is consistency from week to week, whether it’s physical or else wise.”

Chiefs receiver Dwayne Bowe said earlier this offseason that his goal is "to lead the league in receptions and touchdowns," but that didn't fly with the coaches in Kansas City, according to the National Football Post. The report says some of the coaches for the Chiefs "had to have a word" with Bowe about his stated goal. The report says they appreciate Bowe’s enthusiasm and ambition, but they want him to understand Andy Reid’s offense doesn’t work that way. Reid likes to spread the ball around to multiple targets and take what the defense gives them.
The Houston Chronicle says rookie receiver DeAndre Hopkins has overcome some early struggles to look great during the team's recent offseason practices. The Texans have desperately been searching for a solid No. 2 receiver to play opposite Andre Johnson. Hopkins could be on his way to filling that void. "I've been impressed. He struggled early -- which we knew he would -- but I think it helps when you throw a guy in with the ones right away because he gets coached by (Matt) Schaub," Texans coach Gary Kubiak said. "But the last three days he's impressed me because he hasn't had Matt and he hasn't had Andre (Johnson) out here and he’s been on top of what he’s doing. He’s obviously very gifted. We've just got to make sure we've got him doing what he does best."

Per the report, Hester is "working to hold on" to the primary return job. Coach Marc Trestman said Hester is "competing" to win the gig. Hester turns 31 in November and is due $1.85 million this season, two other factors in the team's decision to keep him or not. A return to a receiver's role doesn't seem to be in the offing.

Screws and a plate were removed in a follow-up surgery in March, but he said two screws will remain in his foot permanently.
Goodson's future up in air

ESPN reports that the future of Jets running back Mike Goodson remains up in air, with his case headed to a grand jury. The report says the case could take a couple of months, but there could be a plea deal. The report also says if the gun charge is dropped and Goodson confesses to possession of marijuana, the outcome could be a one-game suspension by the NFL. The good thing in Goodson's favor, at least when it comes to the team and his performance on the field, he has impressed with his explosiveness. The Jets "believe he can be a dynamic player."

Hillman could start Week 1

With Willis McGahee now gone after being released, the Broncos could start Ronnie Hillman in Week 1 with rookie Montee Ball eventually taking over the starter's role. The Colorado Springs Gazette predicts that Hillman is the starter for the season opener. Ball assumes the position by the end of September, and Knowshon Moreno remains a significant contributor in part because he's the most reliable pass-blocker and protecting quarterback Peyton Manning is priority No. 1.

Munchak: Washington is 'our leader'

Titans coach Mike Munchak declared Nate Washington as "our leader" among the team's receivers thanks to his experience, ending speculation the team would try to trade him or release him. "He is our leader. We know how thin that position can get real quickly, and we have a good group to watch," Munchak said. "Nate is very much in our plans."

Health a big issue for McGahee?

The Colorado Springs Gazette reports that Willis McGahee was cut by the Broncos in part because of health concerns. McGahee tore his MCL and broke his leg last season and had only a limited amount of reps in minicamp last week. The official team website reports McGahee was cut because the team wanted to get younger at running back. Saving salary cap space was also a benefit for the Broncos.

Bradshaw to start for Colts?

The Indianapolis Star speculates that Ahmad Bradshaw will start for the Colts even though he might also begin training camp on the Physically Unable to Perform list. Bradshaw has yet to practice with the team, missing minicamp last week while wearing a boot on his right foot, but it's believed that was done for precautionary reasons. Vick Ballard will challenge Bradshaw for playing time.
