Big East: Ranking the bowl matchups

As Louisville prepares for Florida, Charlie Strong has been linked to two prominent openings in the SEC. (US Presswire)

Big East: Ranking the Bowl Games
1. Allstate Sugar Bowl in New Orleans: Louisville vs. No. 3 Florida, Jan. 2, 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN)-- Charlie Strong could face his former team for the first time since he became the Cardinals'head coach in 2010 if he remains in his current position over the next 31 days. Strong has been linked to openings at Auburn and Tennessee. Strong spent seven seasons as the defensive coordinator at Florida (2003-2009) and served as the Gators interim coach in the 2004 Peach Bowl before Urban Meyer took over in 2005. Led by QB Teddy Bridgewater, a favorite for Big East Offensive Player of the Year, the Cardinals are tied for first in the Big East in scoring offense (31.0 ppg). The Cardinals will face a stingy Florida defense that ranks third in FBS in scoring defense (12.9 ppg).
2. Pinstripe Bowl in New York City: Syracuse vs. West Virginia, Dec. 29, 3:15 p.m. ET (ESPN) -- Expect offensive fireworks at Yankee Stadium when the two former Big East rivals meet. Sportsbook.ag has set the over/under for the game at 73.5 -- the highest of any bowl game besides the Fiesta Bowl (77). Syracuse has averaged 38.0 ppg over its last three games, which pales in comparison to West Virginia's offensive output in September when the Mountaineers averaged 53 points per contest. West Virginia hopes to avenge last season's 40-23 loss to Syracuse when the Orangeconfounded Geno Smith with their blitz packages and forced two interceptions. Syracuse must contain Mountaineers WR Tavon Austin, who ranks in the top seven in FBS in receptions (9.17) and receiving yards (104.92) per game.
3. Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, Fla.: Rutgers vs. Virginia Tech, Dec. 28, 5:30 p.m. ET (ESPN) -- The Scarlet Knightswill look to snap an 11-game losing streak against Virginia Tech when the teams meet for the 15th time in series history. Rutgers owns a five-game bowl winning streak, which is tied for most in the nation with Mississippi State. The Scarlet Knights will face one of the nation's top dual-threats at quarterback in Virginia Tech junior Logan Thomas. In 2012, Thomas has 17 touchdowns through the air and 528 yards on the ground this season. Rutgers can hand the Hokies their third defeat of the year against a Big East opponent.
4. BBVA Compass Bowl in Birmingham, Ala.: Pittsburgh vs. Mississippi, Jan. 5, 1 p.m. ET (ESPN) -- Pitt's talented trio of QB Tino Sunseri, RB Ray Graham and WR Mike Shanahan will be making their final appearance in a Panthers'uniform. Graham has rushed for 94 yards or more in four of his last five games. In the pass game, Sunseri has a sterling 19:2 TD/INT ratio. Pitt will face a Rebels' defense that ranks 84th against the pass (251.67 ypg) and 49th overall (385.00 ypg).
5. Belk Bowl in Charlotte, N.C.: Cincinnati vs. Duke, Dec. 27, 6:30 p.m. ET (ESPN) -- The Bearcatswill be making their sixth appearance in a bowl game in the last seven seasons. Duke, meanwhile, hasn't appeared in a bowl game since 1994. The two teams will be meeting for the first time ever in football. Cincinnati ranks 19th in FBS in pass efficiency defense (111.14). The Bearcats will face experienced Duke QB Sean Renfree. The Blue Devils are averaging more than 275 yards per game through the air.

ACC: Ranking the bowl matchups

The ACC has six teams playing in bowls, its fewest since 2004, when the league had 11 teams.
Here is how we rank the bowl games involving ACC teams:
1. Chick-fil-A Bowl in Atlanta: No. 14 Clemson vs. No. 9 LSU, Dec. 31, 8 p.m. ET (ESPN) -- Every year, the Chick-fil-A Bowl is home to one of the better non-BCS bowls, and that is no different this year. Clemson put up a season-low 17 points its last time out against South Carolina and will get another crack against an SEC defense. LSU is No. 11 nationally in scoring defense, giving up 16.9 points per game.
2. Sun Bowl in El Paso, Texas: Georgia Tech vs. Southern Cal, Dec. 31, 2 p.m. ET (CBS) -- Southern Cal was the preseason No. 1 team in the country, but will spend New Year's Eve in El Paso, Texas playing against a team with a losing record. The Yellow Jackets could face QB Matt Barkley, who would be playing his final college game.
3. Orange Bowl in Miami, Fla.: No. 13 Florida State vs. No. 16 Northern Illinois, Jan. 1, 8:30 p.m. ET (ESPN) -- The inclusion of Northern Illinois in the BCS received a lot of criticism, but the Huskies have put up at least 415 yards in 12 of their 13 games. The lone exception was in an 18-17 loss to Iowa at the beginning of the year when Northern Illinois managed just 201 total yards. Florida State is looking for its first BCS bowl win since beating Virginia Tech in the Sugar Bowl on Jan. 4, 2000.
4. Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando, Fla.: Virginia Tech vs. Rutgers, Dec. 28, 5:30 p.m ET (ESPN) -- Virginia Tech is playing in its 20th consecutive bowl game under coach Frank Beamer, but the Hokies have lost six of their last nine bowl games. Now, Virginia Tech will face Rutgers for the first time since 2003 when both schools were members of the Big East. The Hokies have won 11 in a row in the series, last losing in 1992.
5. Belk Bowl in Charlotte, N.C.: Duke vs. Cincinnati, Dec. 27, 6:30 p.m. ET (ESPN) -- Duke is going bowling for the first time since 1994, but the Blue Devils are struggling heading into the postseason. Duke has lost four in a row and five of its last six. Four of Duke's five losses have come by at least 18 points. Conversely, Cincinnati is 9-3 and has won four of its last five.
6. Music City in Nashville, Tenn.: NC State vs. Vanderbilt, Dec. 31, noon ET (ESPN) -- The Wolfpack fired their coach after the season, and the Commodores gave their coach an extension. NC State begins life after Tom O'Brien playing its fourth bowl game in five years. The Wolfpack are facing a Vanderbilt team that has won six in a row, but none of those wins came against a team with a winning record.

Virginia Tech walk-ons Rody, Trimble charged with setting off explosive device

Two Virginia Tech players were arrested over the weekend and charged with setting off a small explosive device after a reported blast at a Blacksburg apartment.
According to online records, walk-ons Joshua Trimble and Brian Rody--both redshirt freshmen from Ashburn, Va. -- were arraigned Sunday morning on one count each of manufacturing and detonating a bomb or explosive, a Class 5 felony. Both were released Monday morning on $2,500 bond and have preliminary hearings Jan. 24 in Montgomery County General District Court.
The nature of the device and the cause of the resulting detonation are uncertain, though police confirmed in a press release that no one was injured in the blast. Officers initially responded to a report of an explosion near an occupied apartment at 8:30 Sunday night.
According to Virginia law, "Any person who (i) possesses materials with which fire bombs or explosive materials or devices can be made with the intent to manufacture fire bombs or explosive materials or devices or, (ii) manufactures, transports, distributes, possesses or uses a fire bomb or explosive materials or devices shall be guilty of a Class 5 felony."
Rody, 19, is a backup quarterback who joined the team last year and spent the 2012 season working with the scout team. Trimble, 20, played in 11 of 12 games this year, almost entirely on special teams, where he made 13 tackles and recovered a fumble against Florida State. Per university policy, any student charged with a felony is suspended from athletics pending resolution of the charge. Neither was listed on the team rosterMonday.

ACC Power Ranking: Wire-to-wire for Florida State

Here's CBSSports.com Rapid Reports ACC power ranking: 1. Florida State (11-2): The Seminoles had some tense moments at the end of the ACC Championship Game, but they took care of business and will face MAC champion No. 16 Northern Illinois in the Orange Bowl. Last week's power ranking: 1. Next up: vs. Northern Illinois in the Discover Orange Bowl, Jan. 1, 8:30 p.m. ET, (ESPN).
2. Clemson (10-2): On paper, the Tigers have the most entertaining ACC bowl matchup. They'll get their third crack at an SEC foe this season. Last week's power ranking: 2. Next up: vs. LSU in the Chick-fil-A Bowl, Dec. 31, 7:30 p.m. ET, (ESPN).
3. Georgia Tech (6-7): The Yellow Jackets lost in the ACC Championship Game, but a near upset of Florida State vaulted them past the two teams they tied in the Coastal Division. They showed they belonged in the game and now face a tough Sun Bowl challenge. Last week's power ranking: 5. Next up: vs. USC in the Sun Bowl, Dec. 31, 2 p.m. ET, (CBS).
4. Miami (7-5): The Hurricanes had a minor win this past week by holding onto coach Al Golden, who has been rumored for several high-profile openings, including the Tennessee job. Of course, the Tennessee job hasn't been filled yet. Last week's power ranking: 3. Next up: Season complete.
5. North Carolina (8-4): Coach Larry Fedora's name has also come up in coaching-search rumors. With no bowl game to prepare for, all the Tar Heels can do is try to hold onto their coaching staff. Last week's power ranking: 4. Next up: Season complete.
6. NC State (7-5): The Wolfpack introduced new head coach Dave Doeren, who seems to have re-energized the fan base with one press conference. Former offensive coordinator Dana Bible will lead the team into its bowl matchup, then Doeren gets the keys. Last week's power ranking: 6. Next up: vs. Vanderbilt in the Music City Bowl, Dec. 31, noon ET, (ESPN).
7. Duke (6-6): The Blue Devils are headed to Charlotte for their first bowl game since the year many members of Duke's freshman class were born. The fact that their opponent was three games better than them in the regular season doesn't seem to matter. Last week's power ranking: 7. Next up: vs. Cincinnati in the Belk Bowl, Dec. 27, 6:30 p.m. ET, (ESPN).
8. Virginia Tech (6-6): The Hokies will go to their 20thstraight bowl game. The 2003 Insight Bowl, played on Dec. 26, 2003, is the only time during that streak that they've played an earlier bowl game. Last week's power ranking: 8. Next up: vs. Rutgers in the Russell Athletic Bowl, Dec. 28, 5:30 p.m. ET, (ESPN).
9. Maryland (4-8): The Terrapins made it through the first week of the offseason without losing any players to injury. Now it's time to heal and rehab in a crowded training room. Last week's power ranking: 9. Next up: Season complete.
10. Wake Forest (5-7): Like many ACC teams that have completed their season, the Demon Deacons had a minor success last week by holding onto their coach. Jim Grobe was rumored to be on the verge of retiring, but no news was good news in Winston-Salem. Last week's power ranking: 10. Next up: Season complete.
11. Virginia (4-8): The Cavaliers cleaned house, getting rid of four assistant coaches on Sunday. QB Michael Rocco was also given a release and will transfer. Last week's power ranking: 11. Next up: Season complete.
12. Boston College (2-10): NC State completed its coaching search in less than a week, while the Eagles appear to still be in the starting gate as they look to replace Frank Spaziani. Last week's power ranking: 12. Next up: Season complete.

Final BCS: Northern Illinois sets the new standard ... on the low end

Northern Illinois made it into the BCS by finishing 15th and ahead of both the Big East and Big Ten champions. They will face Florida State in the Orange Bowl, which is a no-win situation for the Seminoles. Either they embarrass the Huskies or themselves.
NIU is the first non-AQ team to get into a BCS game without being undefeated, and the lowest ranked at-large team in BCS history. They also have the second-lowest strength of schedule of any BCS team ever, just ahead of Hawaii from 2007.
On paper or on the field, the Huskies don't measure up to their predecessors. They didn't just lose, they lost to Iowa, the second-worst team in the Big Ten.
However, you better get used to this sort of thing because these records won't last long. The new BCS, which goes into effect in two years, will not have the minimum standards for non-AQ schools that exist now. The selection committee will simply choose what it believes to be the best of the five non-AQ conference champions (Big East, C-USA, MAC, MWC, Sun Belt) and that team gets a spot in one of the top-tier bowl games. They can be ranked fifth, 15th, 25th, 50th, whatever, that team is in.
The Sugar Bowl was most hurt by NIU getting in. They lost out on Oklahoma as an opponent for Florida and get No. 21 Louisville instead. Cardinals coach Charlie Strong, if he is still the coach by then, will get to face his old team.
There was a fair amount of weeping and gnashing of teeth over the fact that Georgia could not be selected as the second SEC team because Florida automatically qualified as an at-large team. Some felt Georgia should not be punished for losing a conference title game. I don't understand that. Games have rewards, but also risks. Conference title games are high risk/high reward. Unless you're 6-6 going in, apparently. Sure, you "have to" play an extra game, but you can't win it and get the reward if you don't play it.
Georgia is not the first team to lose out on the BCS after losing its conference title game and they probably won't be the last. Only one team ever lost its conference title game and got selected for a BCS game, even though there were other reasonable choices, and that was Virginia Tech last year. The Sugar was in the unique position of not having an option from the SEC and made the mysterious choice of the Hokies over Boise State and Kansas State.
By the way, the Sugar Bowl is the only bowl to host a conference championship game loser. It has done so four times.
NIU is not the only team setting records on the low end. Wisconsin, which faces Stanford in the Rose Bowl, is the lowest-rated conference champion to ever appear in the BCS. The Badgers are 26th, although the BCS only releases a top 25. They are also the first five-loss team to appear in the Rose Bowl. They looked a lot better than a team with those credentials in laying 70 on Nebraska.
Probably the best non-title BCS game is the Fiesta Bowl, with No. 4 Oregon vs. No. 5 Kansas State. Have the engineers standing by.
The title game will be a blockbuster, of course. Notre Dame makes its first appearance in the title game against the defending champion, Alabama. Can't ask for much more than that.

Florida State, Clemson, four other ACC teams get bowl bids

Jimbo Fisher will be without his defensive coordinator as the Seminoles head to the Rose Bowl. (US Presswire)

Six ACC teams will be headed to bowl games over the next month, after bowl lineups were finalized Sunday night.
ACC champion No. 13 Florida State (11-2) is the conference's lone representative in the BCS games. The Seminoles will face MAC champion No. 16 Northern Illinois (12-1) in the Discover Orange Bowl in Miami on Jan. 1. Florida State will be playing without defensive coordinator Mark Stoops, who was introduced as Kentucky's head coach earlier Sunday. Northern Illinois will be missing former head coach Dave Doeren, introduced as the new coach at NC State on Sunday. Offensive line coach and run-game coordinator Rod Carey was named the new coach and will make his head coaching debut in the game.
The appointment capped a whirlwind few hours for Northern Illinois, which surprised many by earning a BCS berth. “We found out when we watched the announcement on TV,” Carey said.
There was heated debate on the ESPN bowl selection special over whether NIU deserved the slot, but Carey didn't seem phased by the negative reaction. “Every kid in this conference plays with a chip on shoulder,” he said. “They were told they weren't good enough by the Big Ten and other conferences.”
“You don't get in this game unless you're a good football team,” Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher said. “They've earned the right to be here.”
Here are the other bowls involving ACC teams:
No. 14 Clemson (10-2) vs. No. 9 LSU (10-2), Chick-fil-A Bowl, Dec. 31, Atlanta, GA -- It's the fifth straight bowl appearance for Clemson and a rematch of the 1996 game, won by LSU.
Duke (6-6) vs. Cincinnati (9-3), Belk Bowl, Dec. 27, Charlotte, NC -- This will be the first bowl appearance by the Blue Devils since the 1995 Hall of Fame Bowl and Duke's first bowl appearance in the state of North Carolina since the 1942 Rose Bowl was moved to Durham, NC after large public gatherings were banned on the West Coast out of fear of Japanese attack during World War II.
Virginia Tech (6-6) vs. Rutgers (9-3), Russell Athletic Bowl, Dec. 28, Orlando, FL -- The Hokies extended the nation's third-longest bowl streak to 20. It's the first game between the teams since the Hokies left the Big East in 2003.
Georgia Tech (6-7) vs. USC (7-5), Sun Bowl, Dec. 31, El Paso, TX -- The Yellow Jackets will play in their 16th straight bowl game, the fifth-longest streak in the nation. Georgia Tech received a special waiver from the NCAA to appear in the game despite finishing with a losing record.
NC State (7-5) vs. Vanderbilt (8-4), Music City Bowl, Dec.31, Nashville, TN -- Despite introducing Doeren as its new coach, NC State will play the bowl game under interim coach Dana Bible, the former offensive coordinator under Tom O'Brien. It will be the first game between the two teams in 66 years.

ACC: 5 things we learned -- Week 13

Miami RB Duke Johnson ran for 176 yards and three touchdowns against Duke on Saturday. (US Presswire)

Here are five things we learned on the final regular season Saturday of ACC football:
1. Even the top of the ACC is not ready to run with the SEC. Yes, Wake Forest and Georgia Tech were blown out by Vanderbilt and Georgia, respectively, but that was expected. Florida State and Clemson were the ones that were supposed to carry the ACC banner this weekend. Both teams were home favorites against their in-state rivals, but they suffered double-digit defeats. This past weekend went about as poorly as it could have gone for the conference, and it has the Seminoles and Tigers to thank.
2. NC State coach Tom O'Brien and Boston College coach Frank Spaziani have coached their final games at their respective schools. It seems fitting that O'Brien and Spaziani faced off against one another in their final games, considering the history between them. O'Brien and Spaziani were on the same staffs at Navy and Virginia, and Spaziani coached under O'Brien at Boston College. Now, both are unemployed. The Eagles were heading in the wrong direction and had to make a change. The Wolfpack, on the other hand, had moderate success under O'Brien.
3. Virginia Tech is eligible to play in a bowl for the 20th consecutive season. The Hokies made it to bowl eligibility but just barely. Virginia Tech took advantage of some second-half miscues to beat Virginia for the ninth straight year and salvage something in a down year. Though the Hokies are heading back to a bowl, it will be interesting to see if coach Frank Beamer shakes up his staff after a subpar season.
4. Wake Forest will not make a bowl game for the third time in four years. The Demon Deacons made it to a bowl three straight years under coach Jim Grobe from 2006-08. Since then, Wake Forest has made just one postseason appearance and has finished under .500 for four straight seasons. Over that span, Wake Forest is 19-30. Grobe did the unthinkable in Winston-Salem, delivering an ACC title in 2006, but the Demon Deacons have returned to their status as a middle-of-the-road ACC program.
5. Miami RB Duke Johnson and Maryland WR Stefon Diggs ended their seasons in style. Johnson ran for 176 yards and three touchdowns against Duke, and Diggs returned a kickoff 99 yards for a touchdown and threw a touchdown pass at North Carolina. It's a shame Johnson and Diggs won't get to showcase their talents at a bowl game. Both players more than lived up to their preseason hype. Diggs and Johnson finished second and third, respectively, in the ACC in all-purpose yardage.

ACC Buzz: Scores plus the best, worst of Week 13

Florida State QB EJ Manuel turned the ball over four times in Saturday's 37-26 loss to Florida. (US Presswire)

ACC scoreboard
Virginia Tech 17, Virginia 14: Cody Journell hit a game-winning 29-yard field goal as time expired to give Virginia Tech (6-6, 4-4 ACC) its ninth consecutive win over in-state rival Virginia (4-8, 2-6 ACC). The game turned when the Cavaliers failed on a fake field goal up 14-7 midway through the third quarter. Virginia Tech took over and went 85 yards in 15 plays for the game-tying score. Hokies QB Logan Thomas threw for 129 yards and a touchdown and also ran for 89 yards and a score. Virginia managed just 217 total yards and 30 rushing yards.
No. 3 Georgia 42, Georgia Tech 10: Todd Gurley and Keith Marshall each rushed for two touchdowns as Georgia (11-1, 7-1 SEC) hammered Georgia Tech (6-6, 5-3 ACC) in the annual rivalry game. Despite only having the ball for 20:04, the Bulldogs used big plays to run up the score on Tech. The Yellow Jackets had two turnovers, including a fumble inside the 5-yard line, and didn't reach the end zone until they trailed by 39. (For more on this game, check out CBSSports.com's Eye on College Football blog)
Miami 52, Duke 45:Miami (7-5, 5-3 ACC) tied for first place in the Coastal Division with a win over Duke (6-6, 3-5) in a shootout. RB Duke Johnson rushed for 176 yards and three touchdowns, passing Clinton Portis for the most yards in a season by a Miami freshman (947). Mike James rushed for one touchdown and took a screen pass 72 yards for another. For Duke, Sean Renfree connected with Jamison Crowderon a 99-yard touchdown pass, the longest in school history.
Vanderbilt 55, Wake Forest 21: Vanderbilt (8-4, 5-3 SEC) scored 28 consecutive points, and Wake Forest (5-7, 3-5 ACC) lost in an attempt to win its sixth game and become bowl eligible. The Demon Deacons had no answer for RB Zac Stacy, who ran for 180 yards and two touchdowns, capped by a 90-yard scoring run in the fourth quarter. Wake QB Tanner Price continued to struggle. He was 17 of 36 for 182 yards and an interception.
North Carolina 45, Maryland 38: RB Giovani Bernard rushed for 163 yards and QB Bryn Renner passed for 305 as North Carolina (8-4, 5-3 ACC) held off Maryland (4-8, 2-6 ACC) in a wild game. Renner threw two touchdown passes in the first three minutes, and the Tar Heels appeared to be on their way to a blowout, but Maryland scored three touchdowns in 34 seconds surrounding halftime. For Maryland, RB Brandon Ross rushed for 141 yards, and WR Stefon Diggs had a 99-yard kickoff return for a touchdown.
NC State 27, Boston College 10: NC State (7-5, 4-4 ACC) scored two touchdowns in 51 seconds during the third quarter to pull away from Boston College (2-10, 1-7 ACC) in what was likely coach Frank Spaziani's final game. Wolfpack QB Mike Glennon hit WR Tobais Palmer for an 8-yard touchdown with 1:14 left in the third quarter to go up 20-10. Boston College QB Chase Rettig threw an interception on the first play of the ensuing drive, and Glennon hit Palmer for a 25-yard score two plays later. Glennon threw for 246 yards and three touchdowns.
No. 6 Florida 37, No. 10 Florida State 26: Florida (11-1, 7-1 SEC) scored 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to snap a two-game skid against in-state rival Florida State (10-2, 7-1 ACC). With a 20-16 lead, Florida State QB EJ Manuel lost a fumble after a big hit from Florida LB Antonio Morrison. The Gators scored on the next play to take a 23-20 lead it would not relinquish as RB Mike Gillislee ran it in from 37 yards. Florida State turned the ball over five times. Manuel threw for 182 yards, a touchdown and three interceptions. He also ran for 54 yards and two scores, one of which came as time expired when the game was already decided. (For more on this game, check out CBSSports.com's Eye on College Football blog)

Clemson QB Tajh Boyd threw for a touchdown and ran for a score against South Carolina. (US Presswire)

No. 13 South Carolina 27, No. 12 Clemson 17: South Carolina (10-2, 6-2 SEC) shut down the Clemson (10-2, 7-1 ACC) offense over the last three quarters to beat the Tigers for the fourth year in a row. Clemson put up 163 yards and two touchdowns in its first three drives but managed just 164 yards and three points the rest of the way. Clemson QB Tajh Boyd threw for 183 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions. WR DeAndre Hopkins was held to season-lows of one catch and 43 receiving yards, but he did haul in a touchdown for the ninth consecutive game. South Carolina QB Dylan Thompson threw for 310 yards, three touchdowns and an interception filling in for injured starter Connor Shaw (foot). Gamecocks DE Jadeveon Clowney had five sacks.(For more on this game, check outCBSSports.com's Eye on College Football blog)
Play of the week: With the game tied at 14, Virginia lined up for a third-and-10 from its 24-yard line late in the fourth quarter. QB Michael Rocco dropped back to pass and targeted WR Tim Smith near the left sideline. Rocco floated a pass, and Virginia Tech CB Antone Exum stepped in front of Smith to make the interception. The Hokies took over with 3:21 to play and eventually kicked the game-winning field goal as time expired, making them bowl eligible for the 20th consecutive season.
He said what? Duke coach David Cutcliffe to the ACC Network during halftime of his team's game against Miami: “It's been a long time since we've played good football.”
RapidReports defensive star of the week:DE Bjoern Werner, Florida State. Although the Seminoles did not have the best day as a unit, Werner played very well. He had six tackles. 3.5 sacks, four tackles for loss and a fumble recovery in his team's 37-26 home loss to Florida. The offense didn't do Florida State's defense many favors, turning the ball over five times.
RapidReports offensive star of the week: RB Johnson, Miami. Johnson had 16 carries for 176 yards, an 11 yards-per-carry average in the 52-45 win over Duke. His three touchdowns came with Miami nursing a lead of one score or less over Duke, including the 65-yard touchdown below in the third quarter. Johnson had 277 all-purpose yards.

(Video courtesy of the ACC Digital Network)
His seat is getting uncomfortable: Mike London, Virginia. The third-year Cavaliers coach lost to in-state rival Virginia Tech once again, and London shoulders a lot of the blame for his team's 17-14 loss. First, he called for a fake field goal up 14-7 that failed with the wind at his team's back. Then, he saved two timeouts at the end of the game to try to ice Journell on a 29-yard attempt. Had he used his timeouts, Virginia could have had the ball back with a little under a minute to play. It led former Virginia and current Texans QB Matt Schaub to tweet this with a message to former Hokie LT and current teammate Duane Brown:

Terrible clock management by my wahoos today. Could've had a min left for O by using TOs. @duanebrown76 dont make me look to bad next week.
— Matt Schaub (@MSchaub8) November 24, 2012
A possible spot on the bench for: QB Price, Wake Forest. Price was 17 of 36 for 182 yards and an interception in his team's 55-21 loss to Vanderbilt. It was the fourth time this season that Price has failed to complete half his passes. In Wake Forest's past three games, Price has failed to throw a touchdown pass and has not thrown for more than 182 yards.
Why you care about these three stat lines:

Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas threw 38 passes and ran the ball 29 times against Virginia. Thomas has been inconsistent and has come under criticism this season, but he carries a large load for his offense. Thomas has been the most consistent runner for a team that has been unable to find a go-to back, and he made enough plays for Virginia Tech to slip by Virginia.
Georgia averaged 7.2 yards per play against Georgia Tech's defense. The Yellow Jackets outgained the Bulldogs 426-379 and won the time of possession battle by 19:52. However, whenever Georgia had the ball, Georgia Tech offered little resistance. Excluding a drive that ran out the clock in the first half, Georgia scored a touchdown on six of its first seven possessions.
Florida State allowed 243 rushing yards against Florida. The Seminoles led the country in rushing defense coming into this week, giving up just 70.6 yards per game. The Gators averaged 5.3 yards per carry Saturday and racked up 107 more rushing yards than any other team managed against Florida State this season.

Key number: 0-4. The ACC went 0-4 in its matchups against the SEC on Saturday. In those four games, the ACC was outscored by a combined 161-74. Needless to say, it was hardly a banner day for the conference.

The battle for bowl eligibility

There are 13 teams that still have a chance to become bowl eligible these next two weeks, and we still need seven more teams to fill all the bowls. Since there are no head-to-head games, all 13 could succeed or fail.
Nine teams play their final game on Saturday and will either become eligible or get eliminated. Only four are favored to win: Michigan State, Mississippi, Purdue and Virginia Tech.
Two others, Georgia Tech and Baylor, have two chances to get the one win they need to become eligible.
Two more, Pitt and Connecticut, need to win twice.
So, it looks like we might not have enough teams. If we don't, we still gotta fill the bowls, and that means taking sub-.500 teams.
The first team that would get chosen would be Georgia Tech if it finishes 6-7 after losing the ACC title game.
After that, 5-7 teams would be picked in order of APR until we get to 70 teams. The top six potential 5-7 teams in the APR are Rice, Wake Forest, Missouri, Virginia Tech, Utahand Indiana. There is no chance we would need to go deeper than that on the list.

ACC: 5 questions for Week 13

This is the biggest weekend of the ACC football season with a couple opportunities to earn some national respect against top 15 opponents when Florida State takes onFlorida and Clemson plays South Carolina. The Seminoles and Tigers will both be at home, and the conference needs its two best teams this year to step up on Saturday.
Here are five questions for the final regular season weekend of ACC football:
1. CanFlorida State enter the national championship discussion with a win over Florida? Florida State has won five in a row, but because of a weak schedule, the Seminoles have not been able to make up any ground in the polls. That can change Saturday with a convincing win over the Gators. It won't be enough for Florida State to just win, though. It will have to rack up some style points in the process to crawl back in the national title conversation.
2. How will Clemson's offense perform against South Carolina's defense? No defense has been able to hold the Clemson offense to fewer than 26 points since the Gamecocks beat the Tigers 34-13 last season. Clemson is No. 4 nationally in scoring offense (44.6 points per game), and South Carolina is No. 13 in scoring defense (17.5 points per game). The Tigers will have their hands full with South Carolina DE Jadeveon Clowney, who has 8.5 sacks and 17 tackles for loss this season.
3. Will Georgia Tech give Georgia a game? The Yellow Jackets have lost three consecutive games in this series after beating the Bulldogsin coach Paul Johnson's first year, and two of the losses have come by eight points or fewer. Georgia Tech has struggled at times this season but has won three in a row. The Yellow Jackets will try to spoil Georgia's national title hopes and build some momentum for the ACC Championship game next week.
4. Can Virginia Tech or Wake Forest make it to bowl eligibility? The Hokies have to beat in-state rival Virginia for the ninth consecutive year to make it to six wins. Meanwhile, the Demon Deacons have to beat Vanderbilt, which has won five in a row. If both teams lose Saturday, the ACC will only have five teams that are bowl eligible.
5. How will Miami play after its self-imposed postseason ban earlier in the week? A game that could have been for the Coastal Division title all of a sudden becomes meaningless for the Hurricanes. Now, Miami has to simply play for pride as it will not play in the postseason for the second straight year. The Hurricanes have said they will treat this like a Coastal Division championship game, but that could be easier said than done.

Saturday Viewer's Guide: Week 13

TheSaturday Viewer's Guide fills you in on what to watch, when to watch and where to watch every Saturday during the college football season.
If you're smart, you've already spent plenty of time watching college football this weekend. That's what Thanksgiving is all about. Those pilgrims landed at Plymouth Rock and shared all that turkey and disease with the Native Americans so that one day you could sit on your couch in your sweatpants eating leftovers and watching college football all day.
Don't let their efforts go for nought. (All times ET.)
BREAKFAST
Georgia Tech at #3 Georgia -- ESPN, noon
Georgia is already going to the SEC Championship Game. But if it wants to stay alive in the BCS title race, it needs to beat rival Georgia Tech first.
#21 Rutgers at Pittsburgh -- ESPN2, noon
Rutgers is still undefeated in the Big East heading into its huge matchup against Louisville next week, but the Knights can't get caught looking ahead to that game when they travel to Pittsburgh. After all, a Big Ten invite followed by an Orange Bowl berth would make for the greatest two weeks in Rutgers history.
#20 Michigan at #4 Ohio State -- ABC, noon
Did you know that these two teams didn't like each other? Well, if the hate isn't enough to get your interest, there's also the fact that Ohio State is looking to finish its season at 12-0 with hopes of a split national title should the dominoes fall into place. And there's nothing that Michigan would love to do more than destroy all of that.
Virginia at Virginia Tech -- ESPNU, Noon
Two teams who have had disappointing seasons based on expectations coming in. So there will be plenty of motivation for both in this rivalry game, but it's slightly more important for Virginia Tech since the Hokies are one win shy of bowl eligibility.
Illinois at Northwestern -- Big Ten Network, Noon
Have you gone to see the movie Lincolnyet? Well, these two teams are going to be playing for the Land of Lincoln Trophy, which is just a Monopoly top hat super-glued to a wooden board -- a wooden board it uses to hunt vampires!
LUNCH
Baylor vs. Texas Tech -- Fox, 2:30 p.m.
This game will be played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. Baylor has played very well the last two weeks, losing by eight to Oklahoma before pulling off the upset of Kansas State last week. The Bears will look to carry that momentum into Arlington as they look for that important sixth win of the season. But they'll have to do it against a Texas Tech team that has lost three of four and is looking to end the regular season on a high note.
#5 Oregon at #16 Oregon State -- Pac-12 Network, 3 p.m.
The Civil War is big enough in the state of Oregon, but this year it takes on even greater importance as the Ducks look to stay alive in both the Pac-12 title race and the BCS. Then there are the Beavers, who would love nothing more than to clip Oregon's wings.
Auburn at #2 Alabama -- CBS, 3:30 p.m.
Is there a chance that Auburn could pull off what would no doubt qualify as the biggest upset of the season? Yes. And there's also a chance you could be struck by lightning while cashing in that winning lottery ticket.
#6 Florida at #10 Florida State -- ABC, 3:30 p.m.
Each of these teams has an outside shot at getting to the BCS Championship Game, but neither can do it without a win against the other. Expect a lot of defense in this one.
#22 Oklahoma State at #14 Oklahoma -- ESPN, 3:30 p.m.
Last year, Oklahoma State embarrassed Oklahoma in a 44-10 rout that wasn't even that close. This year, Oklahoma looks to not only return the favor but keep its Big 12 title hopes alive as well.
Vanderbilt at Wake Forest -- ESPNU, 3:30 p.m.
This is a rivalry. No, I don't know why, either.
DINNER
#11 Stanford at #15 UCLA -- Fox, 6:30 p.m.
This is an important game but one that's hard to predict. UCLA has already clinched the Pac-12 South Division, and Stanford will clinch the North with a win here. The question, though, is whether UCLA even wants to win this game. If the Bruins knock off Stanford, they might have to head north to face the Ducks in Eugene. If they lose, they get a rematch with Stanford in Palo Alto next week.
Missouri at #9 Texas A&M -- ESPN2, 7 p.m.
The oldest, most cherished rivalry in the SEC! Watch Missouri and Texas A&M meet on the gridirion and talk about how much they don't miss the Big 12. Also, tune in to see if Johnny Manziel can put the finishing touches on what is looking like a Heisman season.
#13 South Carolina at #12 Clemson -- ESPN, 7 p.m.
These teams do not like each other, and they don't try to hide it, either. Both Steve Spurrier and Dabo Swinney spend the entire season taking shots at one another, but all that talk doesn't mean anything. If Clemson wants to get taken seriously, this is a game it's going to have to win.
#25 Mississippi State at Ole Miss -- ESPNU, 7 p.m.
Of all the rivalry games this week, this one is probably flying under the radar. But it also might prove to be one of the most entertaining games of the day. Ole Miss needs another win to go bowling. And while the Rebels have played well against tough competition all season long, they haven't gotten over the hump. What better time to do so than against your biggest rival?
#1 Notre Dame at USC -- ABC, 8 p.m.
This game is rather important for a lot of teams. If Notre Dame wins, then the Irish will be going to Miami to play for a national championship. If USC can knock Notre Dame off, then a whole bunch of teams will be scrambling for Notre Dame's spot. In other words, you'll probably want to watch this one.
LATE NIGHT SNACK
Louisiana Tech at San Jose State -- ESPN2, 10:30 p.m.
You probably know about Louisiana Tech since the Bulldogs spent so many weeks ranked this season, but San Jose State has played well this season, too. So well, in fact, that a win over Tech here might just get the Spartans into the Top 25.

The picks: Rivalry Week something to be thankful for

Even though it isn't what it used to be, rivalry week is still one of the best weeks of the season. Even the unimportant games have something at stake. Some of the great trophy games are played and bragging rights are settled for another year.
One of the consequences of realignment is that some of the great rivalries are no longer played (Texas-Texas A&M, Missouri-Kansas, etc.), and some got moved away from the end of the season (Stanford-Cal, Utah-BYU, etc.), but we still have plenty to choose from, and maybe some new ones will emerge.
I hope everyone has a happy Thanksgiving!
My record this season on the picks is 64-38 overall, 53-48-1 against the spread. I've also hit on three upset specials.
Notre Dame (-5.5, cover) at Southern California (Jeweled Shillelagh): This is the biggest game for the Irish in a quarter century. They will not only get to keep this interesting-looking trophy (draw your own confusion) if they win, but they will also play for the BCS title. They're facing a team that has fallen on its face in every big game this season, is starting a backup QB and really doesn't have anything to play for.
Florida at Florida State (-8): The Gators will play in a BCS game if they win. Maybe even the title game. The Seminoles' computer rankings are so bad that even winning may not get them a shot at the title, but they have a huge chip on their shoulder pads. No elite team seems to be getting less respect.
Stanford at UCLA (+2): So, who does UCLA want to play in the Pac-12 title game? If the Bruins don't want to see Oregon, this would be a good week to give some backups some reps. Maybe get some little-used seniors some time in their final home game.

Oregon (-9.5, cover) at Oregon State (Platypus Trophy): Oregon doesn't win close games. The Ducks win big. They put up basketball scores. If the Beavers can hold them down like Stanford did, you have to like their chances.
Oklahoma State at Oklahoma (-7) (Bedlam Bell): The Sooners' defense has failed a couple of tests lately, although the offense did bail them out against West Virginia last week. OU can still win the Big 12 and is a likely BCS participant if it wins out.
Georgia Tech at Georgia (-14) (Governor's Cup): I love the name for this rivalry game: "Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate." The ACC Coastal Division-champion Yellow Jackets will be looking to spoil the BCS title dreams of their rival.
Auburn at Alabama (-33, cover) (James E. Foy, V-ODK Sportsmanship Trophy): You can argue whether this is the biggest rivalry in college football or not, but you can't argue that it has the longest trophy name for the winner. It has been a bad year at Auburn, capped off by a bad week leading up to this game. Plus, there are rumors that Gene Chizik will keep his job. This figures to be the perfect capper to the Tigers' season.
Nebraska (-14.5, cover) at Iowa (Heroes Trophy): One of the new rivalries formed by realignment, Nebraska clinches a spot in the Bigger Ten title game with a win today.
Michigan at Ohio State (-3.5): Trophy? We don't need no stinkin' trophy! In the Big Ten, a league with trophy games seemingly every week, the biggest rivalry of all doesn't have one. Michigan has an outside shot at a BCS game if it wins. Ohio State can end its first year under Urban Meyer undefeated, some consolation for not getting to play in the postseason.
LSU (-12.5, cover) at Arkansas (Golden Boot): LSU looks to give Arkansas coach John L. Smith the golden boot out the door and stay in contention for a BCS berth.
TCU at Texas (-7.5, cover): The Longhorns still have a shot at winning the Big 12 and/or playing in a BCS game. That all goes away if they don't stuff the Frogs on Thanksgiving.
Mississippi State (+1.5) at Ole Miss (Golden Egg): There's a little more on the line for Ole Miss. The Rebels qualify for a bowl if they can knock off the Bulldogs. That said, I'm surprised MSU is an underdog.
Indiana at Purdue (-5.5, cover) (Old Oaken Bucket): Purdue's up-and-down season has a chance to finish with a three-game winning streak and a bowl. That probably won't save coach Danny Hope's job, and it shouldn't. The Hoosiers have gotten better, especially offensively, as the year has progressed.
Virginia at Virginia Tech (-10) (Commonwealth Cup): It has been a disappointing year for both teams, moreso the Hokies. The Cavaliers can make it even worse by winning and leaving the Hokies at home for the holidays for the first time in 20 years.
Troy at Middle Tennessee (-3, cover) (The Palladium): This unusual trophy is usually won by the Trojans, but MTSU has a shot this year. The Blue Raiders are in position to win or share the Sun Belt title. Troy is looking for bowl eligibility.
South Carolina (+4) at Clemson (Hardee's Trophy): It appears that only the Golden Thickburger is at stake here. Neither team is likely headed to a BCS game, although 11-1 Clemson might give the Sugar Bowl people something to think about.
Arizona State at Arizona (-3) (Territorial Cup): Rich Rodriguez's first year in Tucson has gone reasonably well, and it should finish on a high note. The winner will probably go higher in the Pac-12 bowl order.
Washington (-13.5, cover) at Washington State (Apple Cup): It's going to take a little time for Mike Leach to get things going in the right direction at Wazzu. The Huskies have the upper hand for now.
Illinois at Northwestern (-19.5, cover) (Land of Lincoln Trophy): This game used to be played for the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk, but apparently the Sweet Sioux asked for it back, and now they play for a Monopoly game piece. The Wildcats have been one of the few pleasant surprises in the Big Ten this year, while things have gone so badly for the Illini under first-year coach Tim Beckman that some are calling for his ouster.
Kentucky at Tennessee (-13) (Bourbon Barrel): They don't actually play for the Barrel any more, but I bet both teams' fans will be hitting the bourbon early and often as it has been a disappointing year for both. So bad, in fact, that this game features a lame-duck coach facing an interim coach.
Rutgers (+2) at Pitt: The Panthers are favored in this Big Ten-ACC showdown. Oh, wait. Rutgers leads the Big East? Well, this game has no bearing on that. That gets decided next week.
Upset of the Week: Miami at Duke (+6.5). Who knows where the Hurricanes' heads will be after getting the news this week that all their hard work will mean another holiday season at home. This was supposed to be for the ACC Coastal title. Now, it's playing out the string.

ACC: Ranking the games -- Week 13

The final weekend of the ACC regular season features four games against SEC opponents. Florida State and Clemson are favored in their games while Georgia Tech and Wake Forest are both double-digit underdogs. If the league goes 3-1 in those matchups, that would be a nice step in the right direction for the ACC.
Here is how we rank the ACC games this weekend:
1. No. 6 Florida at No. 10 Florida State, Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (ABC) -- The Seminoles have not been able to move their way back up the polls after their loss to NC State back in early October. Florida State has won two in a row in the series by a combined score of 52-14.
2. No. 13 South Carolina at No. 11 Clemson, Saturday, 7 p.m. ET (ESPN) -- Clemson needs a win Saturday to keep its at-large BCS hopes alive. The Tigers are No. 6 in total offense (535.6 yards per game), and the Gamecocks are No. 13 in total defense (310.8 ypg).
3. Georgia Tech at No. 3 Georgia, Saturday, 12 p.m. ET (ESPN) -- The Yellow Jackets backed their way into the ACC title game thanks to Miami's self-imposed postseason ban. Saturday, Georgia Tech can win its fourth in a row and ruin the national title hopes of its in-state rival.
4. Vanderbilt at Wake Forest, Saturday, 3:30 p.m. ET (ESPNU) -- The Demon Deacons need to win this game to get to six wins and bowl eligibility. Vanderbilt has won five in a row and defeated Wake Forest 41-7 last year.
5. Virginia at Virginia Tech, Saturday, 12 p.m. ET (ESPNU) -- Virginia Tech will put two streaks on the line Saturday. The Hokies need a win to make it back to a bowl game for the 20th straight season and have not lost to in-state rival Virginia since 2003.
6. Miami at Duke, Saturday, 12:30 p.m. ET (ACC Network/ESPN3) -- This game would have been near the top of the list before Miami self-imposed a postseason ban for the second year in a row. Now, it will just be the last chance for ACC fans to see Miami RB Duke Johnson until next season.
7. Boston College at NC State, Saturday, 3 p.m. ET (ESPN3) -- There isn't much on the line Saturday, but this could very well be the last time coach Frank Spaziani roams the sidelines at Boston College. Spaziani faces longtime friend and former boss in NC State coach Tom O'Brien.
8. Maryland at North Carolina, Saturday, 3 p.m. ET (RSN) -- This game features the top two players in the league in all-purpose yardage -- North Carolina RB Giovani Bernard (197.1 yard per game) and Maryland WR Stefon Diggs (164.8 ypg).

Virginia Cavaliers at Virginia Tech Hokies: Preview, prediction, TV info

QB Logan Thomas and Virginia Tech need a win Saturday to reach bowl eligibility. (US Presswire)

Virginia (4-7, 2-5 ACC) at Virginia Tech (5-6, 3-4 ACC)
Kickoff: Saturday, 12 p.m. ET (ESPNU)
Spread: Virginia Tech by 10.5
Watchability: Virginia Tech has gone to a bowl 19 straight years, and that streak is on the line Saturday when it entertains in-state rival Virginia. The Hokies have beaten the Cavaliers in eight straight meetings and 12 of their last 13. After losing to North Carolina last Thursday, Virginia is simply playing for pride and to spoil Virginia Tech's season.
Shining Stars: Virginia -- RB Perry Jones has 445 rushing yards and 379 receiving yards, but he has not scored a touchdown in the last five games. As a senior, this is his last chance to get a win over the Hokies. Virginia Tech -- QB Logan Thomas had 247 passing yards and two touchdowns while also running for a score against Boston College. He has been up and down this season, and the offense will go as Thomas goes on Saturday.
Who could steal the show: Virginia -- QBs Michael Rocco and Phillip Sims have been splitting time under center in Virginia's last three games. Rocco threw for 155 yards and an interception last week against North Carolina while Sims threw for 50 yards and a touchdown. Virginia Tech -- WR Marcus Davis received plenty of criticism last week over his effort against Florida State and was benched for the first half against Boston College. Davis caught five passes for 104 yards and a touchdown in the second half in Chestnut Hill.
You going? Ranking the road trip: It's the final home game of the season, and it's against the in-state rival. Despite the noon kickoff, Lane Stadium should be a lively atmosphere.
Magic number for Virginia: 32.3. Virginia has lost its last three meetings with Virginia Tech by an average of 32.3 points per game. The Cavaliers have not come closer than 29 points in that stretch. In his third year, coach Mike London needs to show he is at least closing the gap with the Hokies.
Magic number for Virginia Tech: 149.6. Virginia Tech is allowing 149.6 rushing yards per game, which ranks No. 48 nationally. That includes the Florida State game when the Hokies limited the Seminoles to minus-15 rushing yards. If Virginia Tech stops the run against Virginia, it'll be tough to beat Saturday.
The game comes down to: Mindset. Virginia Tech has owned Virginia in this rivalry as of late, and one has to wonder if it is in the Cavaliers' heads at this point. One thing Virginia has going for it is that it has nothing to lose. Virginia Tech, on the other hand, is facing the pressure of possibly being the team to lose to Virginia for the first time since 2003 and not making a bowl game for the first time since 1992.
Prediction: Virginia Tech 27, Virginia 23
