Big East Court Report: Dec. 1

Cincinnati Bearcats guard Cashmere Wright hit a jumper to beat Alabama Saturday. (AP)

Big East scoreboard for Dec. 1
Providence 73, Mississippi State 63: The Friars (6-2) blew a huge second half lead -- they led by 24 with just over 10 minutes to play -- but held on to beat the Bulldogs. Junior forward Kadeem Batts sparked Providence with a career-high 32 points and eight rebounds. The Friars were without their top scorer, Bryce Cotton (24.3 ppg), who left in the first half after injuring his knee and did not return. Mississippi State (2-5) was led by Wendell Lewis, who finished with 16 points and 11 boards.
No. 5 Louisville 69, Illinois State 66: The Cards (6-1) got a scare at home from the visiting Redbirds, who led for most of the way and by eight at the half. Peyton Siva was uncharacteristically effective from beyond the arc, hitting 4 of 7 from deep after hitting less than 25 percent of his threes a season ago. Tyler Brown led Illinois State (5-2) with 25 points, and Jackie Carmichael finished with 20 points and nine boards.
St. John's 57, NJIT 49: The Johnnies, believe it or not, trailed in this one at the break by 12. But the Red Storm (6-2) were a different squad in the second half, outscoring the visiting Highlanders 34-14 and holding NJIT to just 20 percent shooting after halftime. D'Angelo Harrison again was the offensive star for St. John's, leading all scorers with 21 points. Forward Jakarr Sampson was a beast, scoring 15 points himself and pulling down 17 boards.
Mississippi 80, Rutgers 67: The host Rebels (6-0) salvaged a bit of pride for the remainder of the SEC behind a blazing hot second half where they outscored the Scarlet Knights 48-31 after the visitors jumped out to a 12-2 lead. Murphy Holloway and Reginald Buckner recorded double-doubles for Ole Miss, which held Rutgers leading scorer Eli Carter to just 10 points on 1-of-12 shooting. Myles Mack led the Scarlet Knights (4-2) with 15 points and six rebounds.
No. 17 Cincinnati 58, Alabama 56: As indicated below, Cashmere Wright saved the day. Wright hit a nasty fadeaway as time expired to lift the Bearcats (7-0). Wright finished with just eight points, but he was bailed out JaQuon Parker and Sean Kilpatrick, who both finished with 13. Sophomore Trevor Lacey had 16 points to lead Alabama (6-1), which suffered its first loss of the season.
And, in case you missed it, Cashmere Wright, ladies and gentlemen:

(ESPN)
Villanova 62, Vanderbilt 52: Two struggling teams met in Nashville, and, well, Vandy is still struggling. Mouphtaou Yarou led all scorers with 16 points for the visiting Wildcats (4-3), who also got 13 points and eight boards from forward JayVaughn Pinkston. Vandy (2-4) was led by Kevin Bright, who finished with 12 points and 12 boards. The Commodores have now lost four of their last five, while Nova snapped a three-game losing streak.
Pittsburgh 74, Detroit 61: The Panthers (7-1) roared back in the second half. Talib Zanna led Pitt with 16 points, while doing most of his damage at the free-throw line, where he was 10 of 11. The Titans (2-4) were led by a game-high 24 points from G Ray McCallum.
Star of the night: Providence F Batts. With all due respect to Wright, the Providence junior picked up the slack after leading scorer Bryce Cotton left with an injured knee in the first half. Batts poured in a career high 32 points, also adding eight rebounds and three blocks. The Friars are already down leading returning scorer Vincent Council, so the loss of Cotton would put even more pressure on Batts to perform as he did Saturday on a regular basis.
Quotes of the night
Cincinnati G Wright, on his game-winner:“It was the least I can do. I was basically throwing away the whole game at the end. I feel like if they can take me that far, if I had the shot, it was in me to shoot it.”
Louisville coach Rick Pitino on Illinois State: “They outplayed us. We played really hard. They had answers to everything that we put at them, but we played really hard. I told the guys, the game Tuesday [at College of Charleston] is going to be just like that as well. It's going to be almost the entire year."
Inside the box score -- 3 stat lines worth a second look
10 of 11 -- Louisville is still finding its way without starting C Gorgui Dieng, who will miss at least the next three weeks with a fractured wrist. In his stead, FsChane Behanan and Stephan Van Treese combined for 21 points and 17 rebounds on 10-of-11 shooting from the floor.
34-7 -- Mississippi State -- a team with a short bench -- outscored the Providence bench 34-7. That's to be expected because injuries haved forced many of the Friars' bench players into action. With Bryce Cotton potentially in line to miss more time, the short Providence bench may have disappeared altogether.
2-- St. John's made it super difficult for NJIT to score in the second half, holding the Highlanders to two points in the game's final 6 minutes, 25 seconds.

Big East Court Report: Nov. 30

Syracuse forward James Southerland rose above Arkansas all night Friday in Fayetteville. (AP)

Big East scoreboard for Nov. 30
No. 20 Georgetown 37, Tennessee 36: It was a yawn factory in the nation's capital, as the Hoyas (5-1) failed to break 40 points but were still able to defeat the visiting Vols. Scoring was, quite obviously, at a premium. Georgetown went 10 minutes and 18 seconds of game time without a field goal, while the Vols had a scoreless stretch that lasted more than four minutes. Oh, and neither team scored in the final 4 minutes, 12 seconds. Tennessee (4-2) was led by guard Trae Golden, who finished with eight points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
South Florida 64, Georgia 53: The Bulls (4-2) employed a balanced attack in getting past the visiting Bulldogs. Sophomore guard Anthony Collins led USF with 17 points, while Shaun Noriega added 15, Toarlyn Fitzpatrick had 13, and Victor Rudd had 12 points and nine rebounds. Georgia (2-4) pulled even at 50 with just over four minutes remaining, but the Bulls pulled away late, outscoring UGA 14-3 to finish the game. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Georgia with 19 points.
No. 6 Syracuse 91, Arkansas 82: Syracuse senior forward James Southerland stole the show, dropping 35 points on the road to lead the Orange (5-0) past the hosting Razorbacks. Southerland tied a school record with nine 3s, despite sitting much of the second half with foul trouble. Michael Carter-Williams narrowly missed a triple-double for Syracuse, scoring 17 points, grabbing 10 reabounds, and dealing eight assists. Arkansas (3-3) hung around despite Southerland's heroics, but in the end there just wasn't enough firepower. B.J. Young led the Razorbacks with 25 points on 10-of-23 shooting.
DePaul 80, Auburn 76: Auburn (2-5) had a chance to tie or take the lead, but Cleveland Melvin threw a wrench in the plans with a steal and two clinching free throws. Melvin, a preseason all-Big East selection, finished with 20 points and 10 boards. Brandon Young added 19 for the Blue Demons (4-3) who got out of town with a win despite 28 points from Auburn guard Frankie Sullivan.
Star of the night: Syracuse F James Southerland. The senior was on fire, tying Andy Rautins and Gerry McNamara with a school-record nine 3-pointers. Southerland finished with 35 points off the bench, which is the highest point total for an Orange player since Jonny Flynn dropped 34 in a six overtime marathon.
Tweet of the night

Final: No. 20 Georgetown 37, Tennessee 36. The Hoyas had a game called at halftime this season...it wasn't this one.
— SBN College Hoops (@SBNationCBB) December 1, 2012
Inside the box score -- 3 numbers worth a second look
9 -- Tennessee sophomore Jarnell Stokes finished the Vols' 37-36 loss at Georgetown with nine rebounds. No player for either team had in excess of eight points. It truly was an awful game.
5 -- Southerland was hot early in Fayetteville, draining five consecutive 3s in the game's first 10 minutes. He ended up draining eight in the game's first 22 minutes.
19-34 -- Free throws nearly un-did DePaul, which came away with a narrow victory over Auburn despite struggling from the line.

Podcast: Digesting everything from Thanksgiving weekend

Shabazz Muhammad sums up UCLA's weekend in one play. (US Presswire)

A horrific UCLA loss, trouble in Memphis and uncertainty in plenty of other places. The extended holiday weekend gave us a lot of basketball to digest, plenty of it not ... good. But on the flip side, teams like Creighton, Gonzaga and Duke showed us why we thought they'd be this good. NBCSports.com college hoops writer Rob Dauster joins me to pore over everything, talk beards, hoop nicknames and the forthcoming ACC/Big Ten Challenge.
Rundown:

From the beginning: Thanksgiving stories. I know you're dying to hear the follow-up to Norlander Turkey Bowl 16, how it came down to the final minute. Wait no more.
5:30: UCLA is a messy mess messpile.
9:45: Duke won the Battle 4 Atlantis and now gets to be so hated again. Sweet.
12:25: Memphis fans are freaking out much more than UCLA fans right now, but they probably shouldn't be.
15:30: Villanova's the team not getting enough flak for its lousy start to the season.
20:00: Kentucky/Harrow. Will Ryan Harrow be good enough this season, now that he's back with the team?
22:20: Creighton vs. Gonzaga vs. VCU. Which of these three are the best? Love 'em all.
26:30: Baylor's gonna be Baylor, I guess. If you want warning signs, it's full of them right now.
30:25: Looking ahead to the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, the games we're looking forward to and the ones we wish were aligned.
34:30: Wrap-up, including mention of my Novembeard and the college hoops player who desperately needs a nickname.

Syracuse G Michael Carter-Williams had a career-high 13 assists in an 87-51 win over Colgate.(US Presswire)

Big East scoreboard for Nov. 25
No. 6 Syracuse 87, Colgate 51: The Orange (4-0) continued their dominance over Colgate by notching their 46th consecutive victory over the Red Raiders. Already leading 40-24 early in the second half, Syracuse put the game away with an 18-9 run over the next 6:34. F James Southerland scored 16 of his game-high 18 points in the first half. Syracuse has four days off before a key matchup at Arkansas on Friday night in the Big East/SEC Challenge.
LaSalle 77, Villanova 74 (OT): Explorers G Tyreek Duren hit a game-tying 3-pointer with six seconds left, then scored a go-ahead layup in overtime. The Wildcats went ahead 74-70 on a Mouphtaou Yarou layup with 2:23 left in overtime, but committed turnovers on consecutive possessions to squander the lead. Duren scored seven of his 23 points in the extra session. Villanova F JayVaughn Pinkston finished with 19, but inexplicably attempted a layup on the Wildcats' final possession when his team needed a 3-pointer to tie the game. Villanova (3-3) has lost three straight after a 3-0 start. Two of the losses have come to mid-majors.
Seton Hall 76, St. Peter's 61: The Peacocks were determined to knock off a Big East team from the Garden State for the second time this season, but the Pirates rallied from a one-point halftime deficit with 47 points in the second half. Guards Fuquan Edwin and Gene Teague were scorching hot, finishing a combined 17 of 24 from the field and 9 of 9 from the line. Edwin led the Pirates with 25, while Teague added 20. Seton Hall (5-1) has won three straight since an overtime defeat to Washington on Nov. 17. The Pirates face LSU on Thursday.
Rutgers 87, UNC Greensboro 80: G Myles Mack drained a critical 3-pointer with 1:49 remaining to give the Scarlet Knights an 80-73 lead, then followed it with a steal and a layup to clinch the road victory. Sophomore guard Eli Carter finished with a season-high 25 points, while Mack added 24. Rutgers (4-1) shot 57.4 percent in the victory. The Scarlet Knights have won four straight since a season-opening loss to St. Peter's.
No. 21 Connecticut 73, Stony Brook 62: The Huskies erased a five-point halftime deficit with a 22-8 run to open the second half in a closer than expected victory over pesky Stony Brook. G Shabazz Napier finished with a game-high 19 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the floor. The Huskies went 10 of 22 from beyond the arc, while holding Stony Brook to 27.8 percent from 3-point range.
Star of the night: Syracuse G Michael Carter-Williams. The sophomore finished with a career-high 13 assists, including nine on Syracuse's first 10 baskets. Carter-Williams fed Southerland twice for alley-oops and opened the second half with a steal and dunk in transition. At one point in the first half, Carter-Williams was on pace to break Sherman Douglas' school record for assists in a game with 22. Douglas' record has stood for more than 22 seasons. Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said afterward that Carter-Williams is playing “as well as any point guard we've had in a long time.”
Inside the box score -- 4 numbers worth a second look
6 of 25-- Despite the victory, the Orange shot just 6 of 25 (24 percent) from 3-point range against the Red Raiders. Syracuse can get away with it vs. Colgate but can't afford to have off shooting nights against some of the elite teams in the Big East. Freshman G Trevor Cooney went 0 for 7 from beyond the arc.
17-- Villanova committed 17 turnovers in the frustrating defeat to its Big 5 rivals, including several costly miscues in the extra session. Point guard Ryan Arcidiacono needs to do a better job of taking care of the basketball. After committing six turnovers on Sunday, the freshman has 16 in his last four games.
9 of 11-- Mack continued his hot shooting by going 9 of 11 from the field in the win over the Spartans. In Rutgers' last four games, the sophomore guard is shooting 64.1 percent,
34-- The Pirates outscored the Peacocks 34-14 on points in the paint. It's an impressive stat for a team that primarily employs a four-guard lineup. Seton Hall also finished with a 33-21 advantage on the boards.

Big East Court Report: Nov. 20

Christian Watford's double-double led top-ranked Indiana past Georgetown in overtime. (US Presswire)

Big East scoreboard for Nov. 20
No. 1 Indiana 82, Georgetown 72 (OT): The Hoyas (3-1) were dead to rights, trailing by seven with less than a minute to play. But consecutive 3s by Markel Starks and Otto Porter set up the tying play -- a driving layup over the diminutive Yogi Ferrell -- that sent this one to overtime. The top-ranked Hoosiers (5-0) dominated the extra frame, however, pulling away to remain undefeated.Starks led all scorers with 20 points, but the junior fouled out early in overtime, all but dooming G'town.
Marquette 89, Mississippi State 62: The Golden Eagles (3-1) jumped out to an 8-0 lead, and the Bulldogs (1-3) never threatened in both teams' second game in the Maui Invitational. Vander Blue led all scorers with 18 points, while Davante Gardner added a double-double with 15 points and 12 boards. Marquette moves on to face Southern Cal on Wednesday.
Columbia 75, Villanova 57: This was not the bounce-back game the Wildcats (3-2) had in mind after getting blasted by Alabama last week. Nova again had trouble putting the ball in the basket, shooting just 37.3 percent from the floor, including just 3 of 17 from beyond the arc. Freshman Ryan Arcidiacono was especially off, finishing just 1 of 8 from 3-point range. The Wildcats also committed 11 turnovers -- just a forgettable game all around, and Nova's first loss to an Ivy League team since '02 (Penn, 72-58). Alex Rosenberg led the Lions (4-1) with 21 points.
No. 22 Cincinnati 91, Campbell 72: Cashmere Wright led all scorers with career-high 28 points, JaQuon Parker added 21 points and eight rebounds, and Sean Kilpatrick had a double-double with 15 points and 10 boards as the Bearcats (4-0) easily got past Campbell (2-3) in Cincy. The Fighting Camels -- really -- never had much of a shot, as the Bearcats raced ahead early and never looked back. Darren White led Campbell with 22 points.
Wichita State 75, DePaul 62: The Blue Demons (2-2) got off to a rough start and they were never able to recover. Given the way they started -- turnovers, overall ineptitude -- it's amazing they made a game of this at all. Brandon Young led DePaul with 19 points, but his running mate Cleveland Melvin only added 11, and the two combined to shoot just 7 of 21 from the field. Malcolm Armstead and Demetric Williams led the Shockers (5-0) with 16 points apiece.
Rutgers 81, Boston University 79:Leading by one in the final 10 seconds, the Scarlet Knights hit four consecutive free throws to clinch the win after a flagrant foul by Terriers G Malik Thomas. Rutgers (3-1) has won three straight since a surprising season-opening loss to St. Peters. The Scarlet Knights were led by F Eli Carter with 20 and G Malick Kone with 17. Boston U (0-4) nearly erased an 11-point second-half deficit with clutch 3-point shooting. The Terriers finished 12 of 29 from beyond the arc.
South Florida 82, Bradley 63:The Bulls (3-2) opened the game on a 23-7 run and led at one point by 30 in the dominating win. G Anthony Collins only hit two field goals, but finished with10 assists or more for the second consecutive game. Four USF players finished in double-digits, led by F Victor Rudd with 15 points and 12 rebounds. The Bulls went 8 of 18 from 3-point range, while holding the Braves (3-1) to 3-of-15 (20 percent) shooting from beyond the arc. South Florida allowed eight 3-pointers in Sunday's loss to Western Michigan.
Star of the night: It would be easy to hand this one to Cincinnati's Cashmere Wright, who was impressive dropping 28 points Tuesday. However, if not more impressive, teammate JaQuon Parker's 21 points and eight rebounds is certainly more important for the Bearcats' future. Parker figures to be the third option in the Cincy offense, alongside Wright and Sean Kilpatrick. If his production can be relied upon, the Bearcats will boast one of the nation's most prolific and dangerous backcourts.
Inside the box score -- 4 numbers worth a second look
36-10 -- That was the free throw discrepancy between No. 1 Indiana and Georgetown, and the Hoyas only had two from the line in regulation. Friendly whistle favor the Hoosiers? G'town too aggressive? You make the call.
44-8 -- That's the margin DePaul was outscored in the paint by Wichita State. If the Shockers could do that much damage, imagine what Big East post players will do.
18 -- Rutgers allowed a winless Boston University team to erase an 18-point first half lead. The Scarlet Knights held on, but they'll need to bury teams in the future.
18-of-34 -- Cincinnati entered the game shooting right around 50 percent from the line, and the Bearcats didn't show any improvement Tuesday, going just 18 of 34. It didn't matter Tuesday, but it will down the road.

Freshman of the Year: Marcus Smart charges to the top

Marcus Smart has led Oklahoma Stateto a 4-0 start and a spot in the top 25. (US Presswire)

With two full weekends of the college basketball season under our belt, it's time to start looking at the top freshmen in the country. Anthony Davis held the top spot last year from start-to-finish, save for one week in December when teammate Michael Kidd-Gilchrist temporarily took over No. 1.
This season, I don't expect that we will have the same type of dominant consistency throughout the entire season. With that said, one player has separated himself a bit from the field after a couple of weeks. Oklahoma State's Marcus Smart is the No. 1 player in Jeff Goodman and Gary Parrish's Player of the Year watch -- and it's the same case with Freshman of the Year. Smart has put up great numbers early, while also leading the Cowboys into the Top 25.
After Smart, a number of players could have made convincing cases for being included in the top five -- but we had to make some tough calls. Most teams have only played two or three games, so it's difficult to truly assess which freshmen are the best so far. Last season, the top five guys separated themselves as the season progressed -- will we see the same thing this year? We'll wait and see.

1. Marcus Smart – Oklahoma State

Position: Point GuardHt: 6-4Wt: 225 Season Stats: 14.8 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 5.0 APG, 3.0 SPGComment:Smart has been arguably the most valuable player in college basketball so far this season. He has completely turned around the attitude in Stillwater. This goes beyond his numbers -- he has led the Cowboys to wins over Akron, Tennessee and NC State, completely dominating Lorenzo Brown in the final one against the Wolfpack. He's just a winner and a leader.

2. Nerlens Noel – Kentucky

Position: CenterHt: 6-10Wt: 228 Season Stats: 11.7 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 2.3 BPG, 3.3 SPGComment:Noel came into the season with expectations as a supreme shot-blocker -- and that's been perhaps the least impressive part of his season so far. He's been contributing across the board, including racking up steals at a high clip. Noel has been very solid on the glass and is scoring well in transition and around the rim. He needs to be more disciplined defensively -- he's allowing too many offensive boards.

3. Anthony Bennett – UNLV

Position: Power ForwardHt: 6-8Wt: 240 Season Stats: 17.0 PPG, 8.0 RPGComment:UNLV has only played two games, and it hasn't been against the best competition, but Bennett has been one of the most productive newcomers in the country. He's a versatile offensive player, with the ability to create matchup problems with his inside-outside scoring prowess. There are plenty of scorers on the Runnin' Rebels, but Bennett could be the best.

4. Isaiah Austin – Baylor

Position: CenterHt: 7-1Wt: 220 Season Stats: 16.0 PPGComment:Despite only playing 17 minutes in the opener and missing the second game with an ankle injury, Austin has shown why he can be a huge asset for Baylor. He's stepping out and knocking down 3-pointers, and he's been a double-double threat every night. He's been efficient from the field, and has been tough. He will continue to be a matchup problem.

5. Gary Harris – Michigan State

Position: Shooting GuardHt: 6-4Wt: 205 Season Stats: 16.0 PPGComment:Everyone knew Harris would be a solid two-way contributor, given his athleticism, ability to get his own shot and his knack for guarding multiple positions. Harris, though, has been Michigan State's most consistent scorer. He went for 18 points in a win over Kansas, and has shot 14-for-22 in his last two games. Struggling in the season-opening loss to Connecticut is the only thing keeping him this low.

Others to Note:

There were several guys who just missed: Archie Goodwin (Kentucky), Alex Poythress (Kentucky), Ben McLemore (Kansas), T.J. Warren (NC State), Glenn Robinson III (Michigan), Rodney Purvis (NC State), Brandon Ashley (Arizona),Ryan Arcidiacono (Villanova ) and Rasheed Sulaimon (Duke).
Jordan Adams could have made the top five based solely on his scoring exploits. He's reached 20 points in all four games, averaged 23.5 points so far. Ben Howland needs to find minutes for him.
We expect UCLA's Shabazz Muhammad on this list in due time -- but not yet. He did score 15 points in his debut against Georgetown on Monday, though.
Prezemek Karnowski has had two games of 20-plus points, shooting 19-for-26 in those contests. Against West Virginia, though, the Gonzaga big had six points and four fouls.
Kyle Anderson has shown off his tremendous vision and mismatch ability, but the UCLA wing is just 1-for-16 in his last two games.
Nik Stauskas won't get the most attention on Michigan, but he could be a major weapon as a shooter. He's already averaging double figures.
After a long wait, Arizona State's Jahii Carson is averaging 17.5 points and 6.0 assists through two games.
Javan Felix hasn't been great in place of Myck Kabongo at Texas, but he's getting acclimated. The loss on Monday to Chaminade was embarrassing, though.
Excited to see what Iowa State's Georges Niang does when the Cyclones start playing legitimate competition. He's been productive so far -- 14.3 points, 7.3 rebounds -- and he'll find ways to make an impact.
Some other guys to keep an eye on: Seth Allen (Maryland), Chris Washburn (UTEP), Marcus Hunt (Georgia Tech).
