Big East Court Report: Nov. 30

Syracuse forward James Southerland rose above Arkansas all night Friday in Fayetteville. (AP)

Big East scoreboard for Nov. 30
No. 20 Georgetown 37, Tennessee 36: It was a yawn factory in the nation's capital, as the Hoyas (5-1) failed to break 40 points but were still able to defeat the visiting Vols. Scoring was, quite obviously, at a premium. Georgetown went 10 minutes and 18 seconds of game time without a field goal, while the Vols had a scoreless stretch that lasted more than four minutes. Oh, and neither team scored in the final 4 minutes, 12 seconds. Tennessee (4-2) was led by guard Trae Golden, who finished with eight points, eight rebounds, and four assists.
South Florida 64, Georgia 53: The Bulls (4-2) employed a balanced attack in getting past the visiting Bulldogs. Sophomore guard Anthony Collins led USF with 17 points, while Shaun Noriega added 15, Toarlyn Fitzpatrick had 13, and Victor Rudd had 12 points and nine rebounds. Georgia (2-4) pulled even at 50 with just over four minutes remaining, but the Bulls pulled away late, outscoring UGA 14-3 to finish the game. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope led Georgia with 19 points.
No. 6 Syracuse 91, Arkansas 82: Syracuse senior forward James Southerland stole the show, dropping 35 points on the road to lead the Orange (5-0) past the hosting Razorbacks. Southerland tied a school record with nine 3s, despite sitting much of the second half with foul trouble. Michael Carter-Williams narrowly missed a triple-double for Syracuse, scoring 17 points, grabbing 10 reabounds, and dealing eight assists. Arkansas (3-3) hung around despite Southerland's heroics, but in the end there just wasn't enough firepower. B.J. Young led the Razorbacks with 25 points on 10-of-23 shooting.
DePaul 80, Auburn 76: Auburn (2-5) had a chance to tie or take the lead, but Cleveland Melvin threw a wrench in the plans with a steal and two clinching free throws. Melvin, a preseason all-Big East selection, finished with 20 points and 10 boards. Brandon Young added 19 for the Blue Demons (4-3) who got out of town with a win despite 28 points from Auburn guard Frankie Sullivan.
Star of the night: Syracuse F James Southerland. The senior was on fire, tying Andy Rautins and Gerry McNamara with a school-record nine 3-pointers. Southerland finished with 35 points off the bench, which is the highest point total for an Orange player since Jonny Flynn dropped 34 in a six overtime marathon.
Tweet of the night

Final: No. 20 Georgetown 37, Tennessee 36. The Hoyas had a game called at halftime this season...it wasn't this one.
— SBN College Hoops (@SBNationCBB) December 1, 2012
Inside the box score -- 3 numbers worth a second look
9 -- Tennessee sophomore Jarnell Stokes finished the Vols' 37-36 loss at Georgetown with nine rebounds. No player for either team had in excess of eight points. It truly was an awful game.
5 -- Southerland was hot early in Fayetteville, draining five consecutive 3s in the game's first 10 minutes. He ended up draining eight in the game's first 22 minutes.
19-34 -- Free throws nearly un-did DePaul, which came away with a narrow victory over Auburn despite struggling from the line.

Big East Court Report: Nov. 29

A swarm of Notre Dame students stormed the court after the Irish upset No. 8 Kentucky on Thursday night.(US Presswire)

Big East scoreboard for Nov. 29
Notre Dame 64, No. 8 Kentucky 50: The Irish will likely return back to the Top 25 next week after a dominating win over the defending national champions. The Wildcats might not have Anthony Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist any longer, but they still have a formidable frontline with several talented freshmen. Notre Dame (7-1) maintained an 18-11 rebounding advantage at the half in taking an 11-point lead to the locker room. The Irish extended the lead to 53-35 on a 3-pointer by Jerian Grant from the left wing. Eric Atkins led Notre Dame with 16 points, while Grant added 13.
St. John's 89, South Carolina 65: It may be a challenge to score in halfcourt situations against the Red Storm, if Chris Obekpa and Felix Balamou patrolled the lane like they did in Thursday's win. The two freshmen combined for six of St. John's nine blocks and helped hold the Gamecocks to 36.9 percent shooting. Sophomore G D'Angelo Harrison led St. John's (5-2) with 26 points, on 3 of 6 shooting from beyond the arc. Harrison has scored 20 points or more in six of seven games. If Harrison remains consistent with his outside shot, he may earn a spot on the All-Big East First Team at season's end.
No. 7 Florida 82, Marquette 49: A lopsided defeat in a tough atmosphere in Gainesville could provide a valuable learning experience for Buzz Williams' young team. Already leading 38-24 at halftime, the Gators opened the second half on a 9-0 run to put the game away. Florida easily dissected the Golden Eagles' 2-3 zone in the early stages of the contest and drained six 3-pointers in the first 20 minutes. Marquette's inexperienced frontline had no answer for Florida F Patric Young. Marquette (5-2) was led by G Vander Blue with 20 points.
Connecticut 61, New Hampshire 53: The Huskies escaped with their second straight victory against an opponent which shouldn't have given it trouble. UConn started slowly by missing all nine of its 3-point attempts in the first half and only hit 1 of 14 for the game. G Shabazz Napier finished with only five points on 2 of 9 shooting. The Huskies received a boost from freshman Omar Calhoun, who finished with 16. UConn (6-1) was led by G Ryan Boatright with 19.
LSU 70, Seton Hall 67:The Tigers capped a late 11-1 run with a 3-pointer by Malik Morgan with 5:32 left . Morgan's jumper gave LSU a 63-58 lead it never relinquished. Seton Hall leading scorer Fuquan Edwin attempted only five field goals and finished with just seven points in the defeat. The Pirates (5-2) were led by Brandon Mobley with 17. The loss in the nightcap dropped the conference to 2-2 in the opening night of the Big East/SEC Challenge.
Star of the night: Notre Dame F Jack Cooley. With 13 points and 11 rebounds, Cooley recorded a double-double for the fifth time in six games. More importantly, he was part of a frontline that contained Kentucky's trio of Nerlens Noel, Alex Poythress and Willie Cauley-Stein. The three highly-regarded freshmen big men combined for just 19 points and 10 rebounds.
Inside the box score -- 3 numbers worth a second look
4 of 14 – The Irish perimeter defenders did a solid job against Kentucky's outside shooters, in holding the Wildcats to 28.5 percent shooting from 3-point range. For the season, Kentucky has hit more than 46 percent of its attempts from beyond the arc.
2.7 – The Red Storm shared the ball effectively, finishing with a 2.7:1 assist to turnover ratio in the 24-point victory. As a team, St. John's dished out 19 assists on 33 made field goals. F Sir'Dominic Pointer led the Red Storm in assists with five.
3 – Marquette F Jamil Wilson and C Chris Otule combined for three points on 1-of-9 shooting. Williams will need improved play from his post players if the Golden Eagles hope to be in the upper-echelon of the conference standings come March.

Thanksgiving Eve Podcast: Why we can't give thanks to Jack Taylor's 138 points

Jack Taylor shot himself into the history books with his 138-point game Tuesday night. (AP/Grinnell College)

A sophomore at Grinnell named Jack Taylor scored an NCAA-record 138 points Tuesday night and became the talk of the sports world. But why should a player ever score that many points in a game? What's the ... point? The Thanksgiving Eve pod is packed with plenty of topics, from Grinnell to UCLA to Indiana to Georgetown to Butler to UNC to, of course, Thanksgiving festivities. The best and worst. Goodman and Parrish are here, and this could be our best pod of the new season. Listen whenever you can over the next two days, be it to get away from in-laws or on the ride there.
On the table:

From the beginning: Getting right to the aptly named Jack. The three of us are pretty much on the same page here: Good for the kid, but the whole thing's kind of a joke. It isn't basketball. Goodman actually CALLS FOR GRINNELL'S COACH TO BE FIRED. Yes, that happens. Goodman, you crack me up.
10:00: The big picture with this game is this: Grinnell just put out the greatest recruiting pitch for any D-III prospect in the Midwest and beyond. Incredible PR move for the school.
11:30: Goodman and Parrish arguing. Could basically use that sentence for every timestamp description, though.
12:20: Parrish went out drinking until 5 a.m. the other night, so let's hear about that.
14:00: OK, can we get to the big boys, the ones who actually play D-I? The two turkeys on this pod have been in Brooklyn, watching Indiana play. What's the takeaway?
16:15: Georgetown, once Parrish gets another dig in at Goodman, is the next topic. Otto Porter has all of our attention.
19:30: UCLA, Shabazz and the mess that still exists for Ben Howland.
24:40: The Butler win over North Carolina was more about UNC than Butler. Heels flying under the radar with some woes thanks to all the other news of the week.
28:00: Best part of the pod, the wrap-up with Thanksgiving talk. First off, parades are so overrated. Seriously: what is everyone doing at those things? Goodman gets the Bahamas trip over Parrish for the Battle 4 Atlantis, and he's actually flying on Thanksgiving. Parrish still hates turkey and isn't much of a Thanksgiving guy. I've gotta prep for my annual two-on-two football game with the bros as well. Love November. Love it.

Parrish: Indiana beats Georgetown in OT thriller that caps wild night of basketball

The top-ranked Hoosiers and the underrated Hoyas do themselves proud with a great show in Brooklyn. (US Presswire)

NEW YORK -- The night started with the nation's most beloved mid-major pounding one of college basketball's blue bloods, got more interesting (in a bad way) when an elite freshman suffered a shoulder injury, and turned downright crazy when a Division III player scored an NCAA-record 138 points on 101 shots.
Then Indiana-Georgetown tipped.
What followed was the best high-profile game of this early season.
"This was one of those games where it would've been fun to be up there cheering [in the stands] or watching on television at home," IU coach Tom Crean said afterward, and I couldn't agree more. Final score: Indiana 82, Georgetown 72. And don't let the 10-point margin mislead you. This game was close. It went to overtime.
"Our guys went out and played a high-level team in a high-level way," Crean said. "I'm proud of everybody."
The title game of this Legends Classic was a fun back-and-forth affair -- that started on Tuesday, ended on Wednesday and was played in front of a rowdy crowd of 10,478 -- in which Georgetown trailed by seven with 67 seconds remaining before rallying to force overtime against the nation's top-ranked team on a drive and bucket from Otto Porter, who finished with 15 points and five rebounds. Meantime, CBSSports.com preseason National Player of the Year Cody Zeller led Indiana with 17 points and eight rebounds despite playing with what he told me had been diagnosed as "asthmatic bronchitis or something."
"Up until tonight I couldn't breathe very well," Zeller said between coughs. "But tonight I felt great."
As did Jordan Hulls.
The senior guard finished with 17 points and was named the event's Most Valuable Player.
So Indiana (5-0) won and Georgetown (3-1) lost.
That's the way this game was supposed to go.
No surprise in the outcome.
But John Thompson III still must feel great about his team's two impressive performances here at the Barclays Center this week, and all writers worthy of a vote in the Associated Press poll should have the Hoyas on their Top 25 ballots Monday (provided Georgetown doesn't slip and drop a home game to Mount St. Mary's this weekend).
Yes, Georgetown lost its top three scorers (Jason Clark, Hollis Thompson and Henry Sims) from last season, which made it reasonable to leave the Hoyas unranked this preseason. Too many question marks and all that. But the preseason is over. We've now seen the on-the-court product. And it's pretty clear -- after a victory Monday against a talented UCLA team in Shabazz Muhammad's college debut and this overtime loss to an Indiana team projected by most to win the Big Ten and everything else -- that Georgetown is better than the Big East coaches who picked them fifth in the preseason anticipated. That is partly due to the development of Porter and fellow sophomore Greg Whittington, the latter of whom finished with 12 points and six rebounds against IU and is now averaging 12.8 points and 8.5 rebounds this season after averaging 4.3 points and 2.9 rebounds in a limited role for last season's Georgetown team, which won 24 games before falling to North Carolina State in the Round of 32.
"Whittington is one of the underrated, undervalued future stars of college basketball," said Crean, whose team's next big game will be Tuesday inside Assembly Hall against ninth-ranked North Carolina in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge. "Everybody knows about Otto Porter. But Whittington is gonna be tremendous."
Which means Georgetown could be something approaching that.
"We have a team full of guys who can play," said junior guard Markel Starks, and do you mind if I add to that quote? Because it's not just that Georgetown has a team full of guys who can play. Lots of teams have that. It's that Georgetown has a team full of guys who can play and play well together.
The Hoyas are uniquely long, mostly disciplined and they really understand what their coach wants and how to execute it. Does all this mean Georgetown will challenge Louisville and Syracuse at the top of the Big East? I'm not certain of that. But it shouldn't surprise anybody if that's how this season unfolds throughout January, February and March.
Not now.
Not after what I saw here in Brooklyn.

Freshman of the Year: Marcus Smart charges to the top

Marcus Smart has led Oklahoma Stateto a 4-0 start and a spot in the top 25. (US Presswire)

With two full weekends of the college basketball season under our belt, it's time to start looking at the top freshmen in the country. Anthony Davis held the top spot last year from start-to-finish, save for one week in December when teammate Michael Kidd-Gilchrist temporarily took over No. 1.
This season, I don't expect that we will have the same type of dominant consistency throughout the entire season. With that said, one player has separated himself a bit from the field after a couple of weeks. Oklahoma State's Marcus Smart is the No. 1 player in Jeff Goodman and Gary Parrish's Player of the Year watch -- and it's the same case with Freshman of the Year. Smart has put up great numbers early, while also leading the Cowboys into the Top 25.
After Smart, a number of players could have made convincing cases for being included in the top five -- but we had to make some tough calls. Most teams have only played two or three games, so it's difficult to truly assess which freshmen are the best so far. Last season, the top five guys separated themselves as the season progressed -- will we see the same thing this year? We'll wait and see.

1. Marcus Smart – Oklahoma State

Position: Point GuardHt: 6-4Wt: 225 Season Stats: 14.8 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 5.0 APG, 3.0 SPGComment:Smart has been arguably the most valuable player in college basketball so far this season. He has completely turned around the attitude in Stillwater. This goes beyond his numbers -- he has led the Cowboys to wins over Akron, Tennessee and NC State, completely dominating Lorenzo Brown in the final one against the Wolfpack. He's just a winner and a leader.

2. Nerlens Noel – Kentucky

Position: CenterHt: 6-10Wt: 228 Season Stats: 11.7 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 2.3 BPG, 3.3 SPGComment:Noel came into the season with expectations as a supreme shot-blocker -- and that's been perhaps the least impressive part of his season so far. He's been contributing across the board, including racking up steals at a high clip. Noel has been very solid on the glass and is scoring well in transition and around the rim. He needs to be more disciplined defensively -- he's allowing too many offensive boards.

3. Anthony Bennett – UNLV

Position: Power ForwardHt: 6-8Wt: 240 Season Stats: 17.0 PPG, 8.0 RPGComment:UNLV has only played two games, and it hasn't been against the best competition, but Bennett has been one of the most productive newcomers in the country. He's a versatile offensive player, with the ability to create matchup problems with his inside-outside scoring prowess. There are plenty of scorers on the Runnin' Rebels, but Bennett could be the best.

4. Isaiah Austin – Baylor

Position: CenterHt: 7-1Wt: 220 Season Stats: 16.0 PPGComment:Despite only playing 17 minutes in the opener and missing the second game with an ankle injury, Austin has shown why he can be a huge asset for Baylor. He's stepping out and knocking down 3-pointers, and he's been a double-double threat every night. He's been efficient from the field, and has been tough. He will continue to be a matchup problem.

5. Gary Harris – Michigan State

Position: Shooting GuardHt: 6-4Wt: 205 Season Stats: 16.0 PPGComment:Everyone knew Harris would be a solid two-way contributor, given his athleticism, ability to get his own shot and his knack for guarding multiple positions. Harris, though, has been Michigan State's most consistent scorer. He went for 18 points in a win over Kansas, and has shot 14-for-22 in his last two games. Struggling in the season-opening loss to Connecticut is the only thing keeping him this low.

Others to Note:

There were several guys who just missed: Archie Goodwin (Kentucky), Alex Poythress (Kentucky), Ben McLemore (Kansas), T.J. Warren (NC State), Glenn Robinson III (Michigan), Rodney Purvis (NC State), Brandon Ashley (Arizona),Ryan Arcidiacono (Villanova ) and Rasheed Sulaimon (Duke).
Jordan Adams could have made the top five based solely on his scoring exploits. He's reached 20 points in all four games, averaged 23.5 points so far. Ben Howland needs to find minutes for him.
We expect UCLA's Shabazz Muhammad on this list in due time -- but not yet. He did score 15 points in his debut against Georgetown on Monday, though.
Prezemek Karnowski has had two games of 20-plus points, shooting 19-for-26 in those contests. Against West Virginia, though, the Gonzaga big had six points and four fouls.
Kyle Anderson has shown off his tremendous vision and mismatch ability, but the UCLA wing is just 1-for-16 in his last two games.
Nik Stauskas won't get the most attention on Michigan, but he could be a major weapon as a shooter. He's already averaging double figures.
After a long wait, Arizona State's Jahii Carson is averaging 17.5 points and 6.0 assists through two games.
Javan Felix hasn't been great in place of Myck Kabongo at Texas, but he's getting acclimated. The loss on Monday to Chaminade was embarrassing, though.
Excited to see what Iowa State's Georges Niang does when the Cyclones start playing legitimate competition. He's been productive so far -- 14.3 points, 7.3 rebounds -- and he'll find ways to make an impact.
Some other guys to keep an eye on: Seth Allen (Maryland), Chris Washburn (UTEP), Marcus Hunt (Georgia Tech).

Today's Specials: No. 1 Indiana faces tough test against Georgetown

Another quiet night from Indiana's Cody Zeller could cost the Hoosiers against Georgetown. (US Presswire)

Yet another 12 hours of college basketball is on tap for Tuesday. I could really get used to this. The Maui Invitational marches on, and we have the championship of the Legends Classic.
Note: All times are Eastern, and the rankings are according to the AP poll.
Best game: No. 1 Indiana vs. Georgetown (10 p.m., ESPN). Neither team played its best game on Monday, but Georgetown might have been the more impressive group. Indiana will have to be more efficient on the offensive end against the Hoyas, as Georgetown's size and length will give the Hoosiers fits. Meanwhile, Georgetown has to do what Georgia did, and get the ball inside and create contact. Another quiet night from Cody Zeller would be difficult to overcome against Georgetown.
Second-best game: Saint Louis vs. No. 12 Kansas (9:30 p.m., ESPNU). As one of the Atlantic 10 favorites, Saint Louis has been up and down so far. The Billikens lost to Santa Clara by double-figures, but then beat up on Texas A&M on Monday night. If they still had Kwamain Mitchell, they would have a very good chance at beating Kansas. As it stands. Dwayne Evans will have to hold his own down low against Kansas' Jeff Withey. The Jayhawks' perimeter scorers are tough to contain.
Another one to watch: Butler vs. No. 9 North Carolina (8 p.m., ESPN). Rotnei Clarke's one-handed 3-pointer at the buzzer against Marquette was perhaps the highlight of the early season, but Butler will need more than that against North Carolina. James Michael McAdoo going against Khyle Marshall should be interesting, but can the Butler guards defend Reggie Bullock and Co.? Similarly, the Tar Heels can't allow Clarke and Kellen Dunham to heat up.
Guaranteed win: I'm actually highlighting Campbell at No. 22 Cincinnati (7 p.m., ESPN3) to give a notice about Campbell. The Camels can put up points, with Darren White averaging nearly 26 per game through four games. Trey Freeman is also a really talented point guard. With that said, Cincinnati has an answer for everything Campbell can throw at them – and should roll.
Potential upset: North Texas seems to have righted its ship since losing to Alabama-Huntsville last week, winning three in a row. Could the Mean Green go into Charlottesville and knock off Virginia (7 p.m.)? The Cavaliers don't have an answer for Tony Mitchell, who could dominate inside. Virginia is also working out some problems, so it could be time for an upset.
Three things to keep an eye on:

An under-the-radar game is Harvard at Saint Joseph's (8 p.m., NBC Sports Network). Harvard has been better than most people thought, and Saint Joseph's might be the new A-10 favorite.
In the Maui Invitational, Chaminade looks for its second win a row, against Illinois (10:30 p.m., ESPN2). Meanwhile, Texas looks to bounce back against USC (5 p.m., ESPN2).
No. 11 UCLA is clearly a work in progress. The Bruins are trying to mesh several freshmen with veterans, and Shabazz Muhammad has only played one game. They face Georgia (7:30 p.m., ESPNU).

UCLA shows promise and inexperience in loss to Georgetown

Freshman forward Shabazz Muhammad scored 15 points in 25 minutes while making his debut for UCLA. (AP)

NEW YORK -- Everybody had been so focused on how much time the NCAA decided to make Shabazz Muhammad not miss that we forgot how much he actually did. Like nine weeks in the summer with an ankle sprain. And all of UCLA's preseason trip to China. And another two-plus weeks with a shoulder injury, which led to the heralded freshman getting a grand total of four practices leading up to his highly anticipated debut here at Barclays Center.
"Hopefully I'll get better," Muhammad said late Monday, and I'm certain he will. But the one thing that became clear during the Bruins' 78-70 loss to Georgetown is that Muhammad doesn't only need to get better.
He also needs to get comfortable.

As does Kyle Anderson.
And all these new Bruins.
"We need more time [to practice]," UCLA coach Ben Howland said. "But this is part of the problem with starting so early in college basketball."
Nearly 50 NBA scouts converged on New York City this week with the hope being they'd spend Tuesday watching two ranked teams (Indiana and UCLA) and two projected top-five picks (Cody Zeller and Muhammad) play each other in the title game of the Legends Classic. But the Hoyas screwed that up with a zone defense and an offense rooted in patience and under instructions from coach John Thompson III to "keep moving and keep cutting" because he wanted UCLA's young players "chasing" them.
Why?
Because Thompson III must've figured UCLA's young players wouldn't know how to chase them given that they're inexperienced and still learning how to play with each other and at the high-major level in general. And if that's what he figured, he was right. Georgetown got one easy shot after another in the the final 20 minutes and shot 60 percent from the field in the second half to open up a 14-point lead and cruise to the comfortable win.
"Their offense really, really cut us up," Howland said. "It was a problem for us. You have to credit them, but we're a team that's obviously very young and we really got hurt defensively."
To highlight UCLA's inexperience it's important to recognize that four of the players who led the Bruins in minutes against Georgetown weren't on Howland's roster last season, and it's important to remember (as noted earlier) that they've barely practiced together. In other words, UCLA is very much a work in progress. So while I wasn't shocked to watch the Bruins lose to an experienced and wise Georgetown team in mid-November, I'll be shocked if they're not handling unranked opponents easily by February because the pieces are in place.
Howland just needs to figure out how to use those pieces.
And that's going to take time.
But boy does he have some pieces.
Muhammad wasn't overwhelming -- he's clearly not in game-shape -- but still finished with 15 points in 25 minutes while making half the shots he took. Anderson didn't score, and that was odd. But he still got six assists, seven rebounds and showed glimpses of his ability to make plays in a variety of ways from several places on the court. He's good. Muhammad is good. But anybody with a recruiting website bookmarked knew that long before this game.
The pleasant surprises were Larry Drew II and Jordan Adams.
I didn't know what to expect from them.
But Drew II finished with eight assists and one turnover against Georgetown, and he now has 33 assists and just six turnovers through four games. That's not bad for a guy who spent the early part of his college career making North Carolina mediocre. And Adams? He's now scored at least 20 points in each of his first four games and is obviously going to be an elite scorer at this level even if his exact role still needs to be determined.
Bottom line, that's four good pieces I just mentioned.
Add the Wear Twins and freshman big Tony Parker -- who didn't play against Georgetown because of a back issue but might play Tuesday against Georgia in the third-place game -- and Howland has a roster gifted enough to win the Pac-12. But it's going to take more than four practices for Muhammad and four games for the Bruins for this to look impressive.
It might take until January.
Or February.
But eventually UCLA will be worthy of the No. 11 ranking they currently possess.
"We really just not ready yet," Muhammad said. "But we're gonna practice and get this together, and I think we're going to be a really good team."

Greg Whittington fits perfectly with unconventional Georgetown

Greg Whittington was active at both ends of the floor, constantly making plays against UCLA. (US Presswire)

NEW YORK – For most of the first half, UCLA was getting whatever it wanted on the offensive end. David and Travis Wear were creating matchup problems, and Kyle Anderson was pushing the ball effectively in transition.
Then John Thompson III went to a 2-3 zone defense -- with 6-foot-8 Greg Whittington alongside Markel Starks at the top. The game changed immediately, with Whittington grabbing two rebounds, blocking a shot and hitting a 3-pointer in the closing minutes of the stanza.
Whittington finished with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists, helping lead Georgetown to a 78-70 win over No. 13 UCLA.

He didn't lead the team in scoring (Markel Starks had 23 points) or have the best all-around game on the team (Otto Porter went for 18 points, 11 boards and five assists), but Whittington could be the key for this team going forward.
At 6-foot-8, he's one of the most versatile defenders in the country. Whittington has the size to defend bigger forwards, but he also has the length and athleticism to harass opponents on the perimeter. Before going to the zone, Whittington made things difficult for Shabazz Muhammad in the highly touted freshman's debut.
Last season, Whittington was mostly a role player in the frontcourt, contributing a couple of transition baskets and the occasional 3-pointer. This year, though, he's averaging 13.0 points, 9.3 rebounds and 3.0 assists in nearly 37 minutes per contest. Moreover, he's hit four 3-pointers in three games. Hollis Thompson played the role of mismatch forward effectively last season, but Whittington is making plays as his replacement.
“We've had guys going into the season, maybe unkowns, that when opportunities come, they've been ready,” Georgetown coach John Thompson III said.
The Hoyas are going to be a nightmare to play for most teams this season, as Thompson is going with four guys 6-foot-8 or taller in the starting lineup. When they go to a zone, it's nearly impossible to get the ball inside or get clean looks from the perimeter.
“I don't know if there are too many teams as big as that team,” Thompson said of UCLA. “I think our zone was effective. Most nights, we can be big. Between Otto and Greg, our wings are very, very big. We can be smaller inside because we're bigger at other positions.”
As a whole, Georgetown is going to field unorthodox lineups on the court.
And even though Whittington doesn't fit any classic role on the court, he fits the current Hoyas perfectly.

Postgame analysis: Georgetown 78, UCLA 70

UCLA's Norman Powell (4) protects the ball from Georgetown's Jabril Trawick in the first half in the Legends Classic . (AP)

The Shabazz Muhammad era got got off to a rocky start for No. 11 UCLA on Monday. Playing in the Progressive Legends Classic at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., the Bruins were upset 78-70 by unranked Georgetown in Muhammad's first game since being declared eligible by the NCAA late last week.
Muhammad was impressive in his debut, but the Bruins (3-1) weren't. The highly touted freshman scored 15 points on 5-of-10 shooting, including a 2-of-4 showing from long range.
As good as Muhammad was, another UCLA freshman was better. Jordan Adams scored 22 points for the Bruins, becoming the first UCLA freshmen ever to score 20 or more points in his first four games with the team.
Georgetown (3-0) was paced by an impressive Markel Starks, who scored a game-high 23 points. Starks' 23 point performance was somewhat surprising, given that he had only scored a total of 12 points in the Hoyas' first two games.
When the game turned: The Hoyas took control of the game with a 12-0 run to open the second half. The run turned a tight 31-29 Georgetown halftime lead into a much more comfortable 43-29 advantage. The Bruins never got closer than four points after the run. F Greg Whittington hit two big 3-pointers for GU during the run.
Highlight moments: The first bucket of Muhammad's career came with just over 13 minutes left in the first half. ... Georgetown F Mikael Hopkins capped the Hoyas' 12-0 second-half run with an emphatic dunk that put GU on top 43-29, it was Georgetown's largest lead of the game.
Top-shelf performances:

Georgetown G Markel Starks -- 23 points on 9-of-14 shooting, 3 assists, 3 steals
Georgetown F Otto Porter -- 18 points, 2-of-2 from 3-point land, 9 rebounds, 5 assists
UCLA G Jordan Adams -- Team-high 22 points on 8-of-20 shooting, 6 rebounds
UCLA F Travis Wear -- 12 points and a team-high 8 rebounds

They tweeted:

Shabazz: "It was really exciting getting out on the court for the first time. Just finally getting the jitters out...is a good experience."

Maryland's exodus doesn't mean ACC will take a dip in hoops quality

The ACC takes a hit with Maryland leaving, but ultimately it's bound to bring in another hoops power. (US Presswire)

The speed and cloaked execution of Maryland's exit from the ACC is the least surprising shocking thing to come out of realignment's latest regurgitation process. Of course it unfolded the way it did.
It's lunchtime on Monday as I write this, and yet, a week ago -- even sooner -- nobody was discussing anything imminent or even possible regarding realignment. The moment everyone eased their back, lifted their legs and got ready for the end of college football season and the start of college basketball's -- BAM. More schools on the move.
Oh, what's this? Sorry, folks, but you gotta let me interrupt the proceedings to tell you multiple reports are inevitably showing that Rutgers too is fleeing to the Big Ten, joining Maryland arm-in-arm and kicking the dominoes once more with glee as they tango toward a new conference.
This time, it's not football, it's TV driving the bus. Football is the motivator, but that "footprint" and "market" and "opportunity" are really just euphemisms for: "holy crap TEEVEE MONEY!!!!"
But what about ACC hoops? Ah, right, that pesky little basketball angle. Basketball: the other major sport involved in this, the one that also feels the effects. You know, Maryland basketball, the sport the school is actually known for? What does its exodus mean for the ACC? It means some rivalries will die (I can see Duke vs. Maryland getting nice and hot again for the next two years before getting killed off) and that's just casual causalities at this point. Overall, the watered down, behemoth reconfiguration of college sports' conferences has all but sucked the fun out of most rivalries, whether they're football or basketball.
It's no longer about rivalries. At this point, I feel college sports has about three or four truly untouchable, immovable rivalries that can withstand conference earthquakes. Everything else is on wobbly ground. Texas vs. Texas A&M forever proves this a truth.
So put the nostalgia and sadness over tradition, history and rivalries aside. You'll then see the ACC is going to be fine. Yes, fine. Maybe more than that. Instability is probably still on the way, what with murmurs that Florida State, Clemson or Georgia Tech could be thinking about leaving too. To them, I say, hey, go ahead. From a hoops perspective, the league can more than survive that. In fact, it's probably going to get a program imported from the fire-alarmed Big East that can replace Maryland, if not improve it. Connecticut, Louisville, Cincinnati -- you have to figure all three would love to get involved at this point on the basketball end of things, and football would be the bonus.
(UPDATE: And look at this. This is how fast news is moving: Could UConn already be getting in on the ACC as early as Tuesday?)
And it's how it should be. Now and forever: the ACC is a basketball league. Don't tell that to Maryland, because it's clearly not interested in reveling in the ACC's reformation, but it is. When Pittsburgh and Syracuse, and then Notre Dame, all decided to bolt on the Big East to head to the ACC (moves that will go into effect next season), football was the catalyst (Notre Dame not included there, though; the Irish remain independent in football) but basketball was the benefactor.
The ACC hasn't been the same league since 2003 changed its landscape, bringing in Virginia Tech, Boston College and Miami. It's true the league's best days of top-to-bottom competition are behind it, but not entirely. The ACC is set up to be the best basketball league in the country. Losing Maryland is only a temporary wound. There are plenty of schools that would love to upgrade to the ACC, but more importantly, they are schools with big-time basketball credentials.
That's what should matter to the ACC. Football brings in money, but the product is not good enough nationally to keep up in the race. The league needs to embrace its basketball identity and own it. It worked for more than 40 years and it can work again.

And your latest conference realignment loser is ... the Big East (again!)

Could Louisville be the next school that leaves the Big East? Will the ACC want the Cards to replace Maryland? (US Presswire)

So who's the biggest loser in Monday's realignment developments?
The Big East, of course.
Just like always.
And, no, I don't really care about Rutgers (of the Big East) following Maryland (of the ACC) to the Big Ten because I don't have to negotiate a television contract with anybody. That's Big East commissioner Mike Aresco's job -- though, it should be noted, his job just got tougher. And I don't care about academics either because, let's be honest, nobody cares about academics. I'm looking at this strictly from a sports perspective, and the Big East won't be diminished in any noticeable way in the eyes of fans by Rutgers leaving to join the Big Ten.
It's the next move that's gonna hurt.
Because you know there's a next move coming.
The Big East has been for a decade now like the bar people go to when they need a quick hook-up to replace someone lost, and it's a bar full of folks who can't wait to leave. Far as I know, no Big East school has ever rejected the chance to exit the league for another power conference. It started with Virginia Tech, Boston College and Miami leaving for the ACC in 2003, then continued with TCU and West Virginia leaving for the Big 12, and Syracuse and Pittsburgh leaving for the ACC. And now Rutgers is leaving for the Big Ten. And you just know ACC commissioner John Swofford is sitting in Greensboro figuring out how to replace Maryland, and you just know that'll likely lead to him poaching Connecticut, Louisville, Cincinnati or USF from the Big East, which is among the reasons the Big East's wikipedia page has a section titled "Instability" and another titled "Continuing Instability."
Put more simply, the Big East is about to also lose UConn, Louisville, Cincinnati or USF -- and some reports have suggested that Georgetown and St. John's might be on the ACC's radar, too. So whatever happens next is gonna hurt the Big East from a sports perspective in a noticeable way. And if the SEC ever decides to add Florida State and/or Clemson from the ACC -- or the Big Ten ever decides to add Georgia Tech from the ACC -- guess where Swofford will look to fill those holes? The Big East, naturally. And there really isn't a scenario that doesn't have the Big East -- as USA Today's Dan Wolken put it -- eventually looking more like the original version of C-USA than the Big East I grew up with.
Hell, it might be there already.
So pour one out for the old Big East.
It's the league that keeps on giving -- to everybody.
